Individual Details

Philip Derrick Maxim RABOIN

(23 Jan 1872 - 1 Mar 1939)

Given name at baptism was "Maxim Philip," but he always went by "Philip." His death record gives his middle name as "Derrick." Also, the surname was spelled RABOUIN on the baptismal record.

Never married

Blind from the age of three months -- scarlet fever. (Doris Larson thought it was measles; records of the Michigan School for the blind state that it was scarlet fever.)

Attended the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing. There he learned Braille, got a good education, and was introduced to music. It was there that he was given a violin and taught how to play. Not clear yet when he began at this school, but according to the 1884 Census, at 12 years of age he still was not attending school and could not read or write.

Gifted musician -- played the violin. He organized several orchestras, and in the Daggett area, he was known as "Professor Raboin." He also ran several businesses, and while he was never able to live independently, he did as much as he could to be self-sufficient. He was also very well-read -- in braille, of course -- and continued to learn all his life, and even attended college classes at St. Norberts. His brothers and sisters loved him with a respect bordering on reverence.

Cause of death, according to obituary (De Pere Journal, 2 Mar 1959), was pneumonia. He died in the home of Maggie and Wilfrid Vincent, at 8:15 pm. Family tradition says that there was a scent of roses in the room at the time of his passing, traditionally believed to be a sign of sanctity or the presence of angels.

Funeral at Saint Joseph's Church in De Pere, and burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
