James Marion Petty
(March 8, 1833 - February 9, 1905)
James Marion Petty married Arrena Fowler, who was of another pioneer family of Pettytown. 9 children were born to this couple. Uncle Jim, as he was called, spent most all of his life in the Pettytown community with the exception of a short time that he lived at Santa Anna in Coleman County where he and wife ran a hotel. While at Santa Anna, their youngest child, a girl, ran away and married Harvey Smith and she never became reconciled to her family because they objected to her marriage. This Mrs. Lizzie Smith still lives with her daughter at Monahans, Texas.
James Marion Petty enlisted in July 1861 in Caldwell County, Texas with Lone Star Mounted Rifles, 25th Bgd, under the command of Capt. John Mye.
Uncle Jim Petty's health broke and he had to give away his farm in order to draw a Confederate pension. He retired to Pettytown where he died at the home of his son. The cause of his death was said to be consumption that he had contracted druing the Civil War. Uncle Jim and Aunt Remie are buried in the Pettytown Cemetery.
