Ann Catherine Petty

(January 18, 1831 - February 4, 1922)

Ann Catherine Petty married Thomas Williams first in Missouri and came to Texas as a widow. She married Mr. Lawrence who rode off on his horse and never returned. She later was married to L. S. Pogue but no children were born to the last union. There were 4 children by Williams. Aunt Ann Pogue, as she was known to everyone at Pettytown, lived longer than all of the Petty children. She did not die until 1922 and before her passing she told many of the stories in this Petty history. She had many experiences during the Civil War. One of them was of going from the South into Kentucky with her husband hidden under a wooden tub in their wagon. She drove through Confederate lines all day and they searched the wagon twice but never found him. She always said that she wasn't afraid of anything, not even death. It is said that she never had a headache in her life nor ever took a dose of medicine. At the age of 91 years, she went to bed and slept her last hours away, conscious during all of her waking hours. She is buried in Willow Creek Cemetery near Sublime, Lavaca County, Texas

1922 Obituary, Hallettsville, TX paper Pioneer Lady Dies After attaining the ripe old age of 91 years and 17 days, Mrs. Ann Catherine Pogue died at the home of her son, Mr. Walter Williams, 3 miles south of Sublime, Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, after a short illness. The funeral took place in the Willow Creek Cemetery Sunday at 2 pm, services being held by Rev. A. W. Rabb of the Baptist Church and a large member of relatives and friends were present to pay the last sad tribute of love. Mrs. Pogue was born in TN, 1/18/1831, but came as a young girl with her parents to Missouri where she was married to Thomas Williams who preceded her to the grave 57 years ago. Later, in 1866 she came to Texas near Red Rock, where she was married about a year later to Levi S. Pogue, who died in 1911. Until the death of her second husband she had continually resided at Red Rock but has since been living with her children, mostly with Mr. and Mrs. Williams near Sublime. With the exception of growing deafness Mrs. Pogue had been in good health and mentally alert and cheerful almost till the last. She was a great reader and despite the advanced age, always kept track of the doings in the present-day world. She had been ill only five days and until within twelve hours of her death she was perfectly conscious. She lived as she died, a true Christian in thought and deed, dropping off into the arms of her Master as a ripened fruit drops off the tree. She had been a life member of the Church of Christ and as such had not merely believed, but had practiced the things a Christian should. Her children and grandchildren and all others who know her, loved and respected her as few women are loved and respected. mrs. Pogue was the last of sixteen children, and was the mother of four children; Joseph Williams, who died in 1912, Mrs. Jane Beck; who died five years ago; C. T. Williams of Pasche, Concho Co.; and Walter Williams of near Sublime. Ellis Williams of this city is one of her grandchildren.
