Individual Details
Betty Elizabeth Dawson
(February 5, 1805 - August 3, 1873)
This is where the Pettys get their Indian blood. Elizabeth was one-half Cherokee Indian from the state of Tennessee. Many of the Cherokee Indians migrated to Oklahoma in later years. It is said that Elizabeth's mother was the daughter of a Colonel Potts. Her father was Samuel Dawson. Old timers of Pettytown said that she once had a brother, Riley Dawson, to visit her at Pettytown. He rode on horseback and left the same way. It is thought that he came from Oklahoma.
The Pettys in general were daring and adventurous. Like all pioneers they feared nothing and if there were a war or anything dangerous going on they were among the first to get into it. All of the sons of John and Elizabeth served in the Civil War. Some saw action in battle while some endured hardships that affected their health in later years. All of their 14 living children followed them to Texas but all did not settle at Pettytown. Others stayed there for a while and then moved away. The land was poor in Bastrop County and the spirit of adventure carried some to other places.
