Joseph Franklin "Frank" Griffith

(Abt January 20, 1839 - July 24, 1898)

FAG 26934484

"J. F. Griffith had a cattle brand # 1631 (sort of a "Z" with a line coming off the center right side) and a hog mark recorded in in McCullough County, Texas, April, 3 1882." (McCullough County Records. Note: This was the same brand, with an eyebrow added, that his son, Joseph Henry Griffith was using in Coleman County in 1884.)

"Joseph Franklin Griffith ran a riverboat at Blackwell Crossing, Colorado River, near Winchell, Texas, about thirty miles from Brownwood, Brown County, Texas. He was also a farmer and was in Comanche County in 1860; in Arkansas 1869 - 1875; and was back in Texas, Coleman County, in 1880. He and Roenia Guest had eight children and he also raised her son, William Sylvester McIntosh. Roenia was a midwife and was often called upon for assistance in the area where they lived. After Roenia's death, he married a young Indian girl and the children from his first marriage drifted away from home when they were old enough to be out on their own. The girls, some of whom were older than their stepmother, had been taking care of the household duties and their younger siblings and found it difficult to remain at home. Joseph Franklin Griffith and Arizona Trent (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Arizona's maiden name was Hanson, I don't know where "Trent" came from.) had seven children; he was sixty years of age when his last child was born and he died a couple of years later. His grave is encased in a native stone housing and her grave is outlined with native stones." (Peggy Vanoy, Lubbock, Texas.)

"On 13 March 1869, Joseph F. Griffith sold 75 head of hogs and 160 acres of land to John H. Hanson for $200." (Comanche County, Texas Deed Book B, page 202. NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: The selling of this land was apparently in preparation for the move to Arkansas.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: According to Grace Terry Brooke, a sister of Joseph Franklin Griffith was buried next to him.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: The death year of 1901, as given on the tombstone of Joseph Franklin Grifith is incorrect, as he died before his daughter, Mae was born, and he was deceased before the 1900 census was taken. The tombstone error appears to have came from the fact that Mae always claimed to be younger than she was, so when the stones were made after Arizona died in 1934, no one could remember just when Joseph Franklin died, so they based his death date on what Mae claimed to be her birth date. He must have died after 24 Jul 1898, however, as Mae as born in May 1899. It was a well established fact that Mae never saw her father, as he had died before she was born.)

Information of the family of Joseph Franklin Griffith and his two wives from the obituary of Joseph H. Griffith; Wilson Bible of Odie Griffith; personal information from Della (Griffith) Terry; death certificate of Joseph H. Griffith; Coleman County marriage records; tombstones (which have incorrect dates inscribed); heirs listed on old deeds in possession of Iola Terry.
