Individual Details

Daniel D. Griffith

(March, 1812 - June 1, 1886)

Note from Ralph Terry: Some researchers do not include Daniel Griffith as a son of John. However, it appears to me that he was the son of a John Griffith, as John was living next door to Daniel in 1840.

"On 24 November 1842, Daniel Griffith bought 65 acres of land in Hopkins County, Kentucky on the waters of Buffaloe, a branch of the Tradewater River, from William L. Keyser for $65.00. On 9 August 1851, Daniel Griffith and his wife, Anna Eliza Griffith, sold this same land to John Cranor of Christian County, Kentucky. Anna Eliza's father's (James Trotter) will was made in March 1852, and he was dead by October 1852, as his estate was probated at that time. From these records, Daniel and Anna Eliza Griffith probably did not leave Kentucky until 1851 or 1852." (Ralph Terry.)

"Daniel Griffith was reared in North Carolina and followed the occupation of farming. In 1836 he removed with his family (from) Guilford County, North Carolina, (to Kentucky) where he made his home until 1848, when he went to Stoddard County, Missouri. In 1858 he became a resident of Comanche County, Texas, and in 1867 moved to Arkansas, but afterwards returned to Texas, his death occurring in Collin County, Texas in 1886. He was a Democrat in politics and gave and active support to his party, although he never aspired to office. His wife still survives him and makes her home in Chickasaw Nation. She is a member of the Christian Church. In their family were twelve children, namely: J. A., Jane, George, Franklin, John, Sarilda, Madison, Rebecca, Columbus, Jemina, Julia and Newton." (HISTORY OF TEXAS, 1896, The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, page 528.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Due to the 1850 census showing Daniel and his family living in Hopkins County, it appears that they did not leave Kentucky until after 1850, not in 1848, as reported in the above history.)

L. must have been the census takers abbreviation for Ann Liza. Both of her parents were born in North Carolina, as far as is known. I assume "Merland" means "Maryland.")

"There was a sister of Joseph Franklin Griffith buried next to him at Downing Cemetery. Her name might have been Lizzie." (Grace Brooke, about 1978.)
