While associated with a surveying-party Amos Atkins selected two choice lots, one for himself and one for his brother-in-law, Stephen Jones, Jr., early in 1809. Stephen Jones settled on his land, Lot 47 and built a log house about a mile south of the present village of Sinclairville, the first habitation in the area. Amos Atkins erected a log house on his land without delay in 1809 or 1810.
From the Cyclopedia of Chautauqua County: "This year [1810] the town of Gerry was settled by Stephen Jones and Amos Atkins. They settled in the northern part of the town, near Sinclairville. Notes
Death
The tombstone is very hard to read and the closest Curtis Jones, who took pictures of the tombstone, could determine is that it says 80 years and 3 months. From Stephen's will his death may have been between 23 May and 10 August of 1865.
