Individual Details

Stephen JONES

(4 Jun 1762 - 3 Jan 1846)

Baptized 1 Aug 1762 Second Church of Berwick, Maine.
According to his wife's, Mehitable, Widow's Pension (W766), he joined the Militia from Bervick, Maine in April 1779 and the Massachusetts Soldier and Sailors, Volumne 8, Page 960 indicates he served during the disastrous Penobscot Expedition in July 1779. He served under Captain Goodwin and Colonel Little and was discharged at seventeen years old, 10 September 1779. According to the NSDAR Records, he next served as a Marine and the Widow's Pension papers indicate on the ship Ranger for eleven months starting in October 1779. It is believed he was a Prisoner of War when the Ranger was captured in 1780 while defending Charleston, South Carolina before May 1780 when Charleston surrendered to the British. His pension record had eleven months subtracted from his service time possibly because he was a POW for at least part of that enlistment. He served under Captain Thomas Simpson of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. His future brother-in-law, Noah Ricker, was captured and a POW at the time of Stephen. His last service was as a seaman on the ship Alexander for seven months in 1781 under Captain Thomas Simpson again.
1790 Waterborough Town, York County, Maine census indicates one free white male of 16 years and upward, including heads of families; two free white males under sixteen years; two free white females including heads of families. This census is questionable in the mind of the writer.
The Methodist Church was organized by Elder Stebbins, it is said about the year 1800, consisting of the following named individuals: Thomas Gutil, first class-leader, and wife; John Henderson and wife; Timothy Parcher and wife; John Jones; David Straw and wife; John Hudson and wife; Joseph Fiske and wife; and Simeon Woolson and wife. The year following, Stephen Jones and wife; George Scagel (subsequently many years class-leader) and wife; and Lemuel Lyon and wife were added to the class.
In 1832 a resident of Waterbury, Washington County, Vermont.
1840 Waterbury, Vermont census indicates one male of 70 under 80 (Stephen) and one female of 70 under 80 (Mehitable).
Some records indicate he was a Navy service veteran and others indicate an enlisted soldier who applied for service 7 Aug 1832 and widow applied for pension 26 May 1853 in Washington County, Vermont, aged 78.
Revoluntionary Soldiers who are buried in Waterbury include: Ezra Butler and Stephen Jones.
