Freedom JONES

Born in Chautauqua County, New York, probably Gerry.
In the 1860 Census he is living in Wagner, Clayton County, Iowa with his wife, Nancy Ann and family (Dwelling 1444 Family 1466); Helen (Ellen) M., Clayton, and step-children Reuben, Lyman and Polly Ross.
He enlisted either 14 or 29 August 1862 from Farmersburg, Clayton County, Iowa and joined Company E, 27th Iowa Infantry at age 39 as a 3rd Corporal, later advanced to Corporal. He was discharged on 29 December 1862 in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He filed for Civil War Pension on appears to be 16 March 1866. His wife Nancy filed for Civil War Pension, from Oklahoma, appears to be on 8 September 1899.
In a genealogy article about his daughter, Nettie, it indicates he and his family moved to a farm near Homer, Hamilton County, Iowa in 1868.
In the 1870 Census he is living in Webster Township, Hamilton County, Iowa (Page 8, Dwelling 50, Family 51) with his wife Nancy Ann and children Ellen M., Nettie, Frank, Clarissa, Mary and step-daughter Polly Ross.
In the 1880 Census he is still living in Webster with his wife Nancy Ann and three of their children; Frank, Clarissa, and Martha.
In the 1890 Smith's First Directory of Oklahoma Territory for the Year Commencing August 1st, 1890, he is listed a Carpenter and his residence is Warner and W 4th.
In the 1890 First Territorial Census of Oklahoma he (age 67, b. NY, 13 months in Oklahoma, Served Co E 27th Iowa) is listed on 9 June 1890 in Guthrie, Neil (Logan) County, Oklahoma, page 195, with his wife Nancy (age 61, b. VA, 12 months in Oklahoma) and children Frank A. (age 26 b. IA, 12 months in Oklahoma) and Martha M. (age 21, b. IA, 12 months in Oklahoma).
In the 1899 Guthrie, Logan County, Oklahoma and the R. L. Polk and Company Guthrie City Directory, he is listed as a Carpenter and his residence is on the corner of Warner and 5th W.
From the Guthrie Daily Leader, Tuesday Evening, February 21, 1899, Page 4:
"FREEDOM JONES BURIED.
Funeral From Barnes Chapel - Laid to Rest In Summit View.
The remains of Freedom Jones, who died yesterday at Mulhall, were interred in Summit View cemetery this afternoon, the funeral taking place from Barnes Chapel. Deceased was 76 years old, a Christian and an old soldier. A wife and three grown sons survive him."

Buried in Block 11, Lot 9. Freedom Jones, born Apr. 7, 1823, died 20 Feb., 1899, Civil War stone; Corpl. Co. E 27 IA Inf, "Asleep in Jesus." Buried in same Block and Lot as his wife, Nancy Ann.There is an indication in the Iowa WPA Gravestone Records that a Freedom Jones, in the same Civil War Regiment of above Freedom is buried in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Bremer County, Iowa.
