Daniel Luther FURR
(27 Jul 1860 - 25 Sep 1964)
I don't know what the real story is about why my grandfather left North Carolina in 1900 (I'm trying to find out). But, he went all the way from North Carolina to Fort Douglas, Utah and enlisted in the US Army.
According to a page (which I have seen) from the Levi L. Furr family bible, his name is recorded as David L. Furr, born July 27, 1868. He always told his children that he was born 07/27/1860 and that is what we have on his tombstone. In the 1950's, I met several of his family members from North Carolina. They all called him, Luther. From what I have found, my grandfather started using "Daniel" Luther Furr as his name in 1900 when he enlisted in the US Army. I have copies of his original military records. He also lied about his date of birth on those records, saying he was born in 1872 (making him several years younger than he actually was at the time of his enlistment).
Whatever his date of birth, he would have been about 31+ years old in 1900 when he left North Carolina. I find it hard to believe that a man that age did not have a wife and children. Nothing is known about this in my immediate family.
