Alexander Liholiho
(9 Feb 1834 - 30 Nov 1863)
LINEAGE
Conflict: Genealogy of the Chiefs, Hms G46, p 5 lists parents as Kinau (w) and Kauikeouli, son of Kamehame (k) and Kalanikauikauikaalaneo, daughter of Kiwalao and Kekuiapoiwa.
LIFE
A. Helekunihi, Chronology- 1784-1859 and 1555-1730, lists birth date as September 2, 1834.
B. He was adopted by Kamehameha III (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 348; Pratt, Keoua: Father of Kings, p 31). This is likely the reason he became Kamehameha IV instead of his elder brother Lot - who succeeded him.
"This prince was adopted by King Kamehameha III, his uncle, whom he succeeded as monarch of Hawaii under the style and title of King Kamehameha IV. He married Emma Rooke, the High Chiefess Kaoanaeha surnamed Kaleleonalani and had one son, the Prince of Hawaii Albert Edward Kauikeouli who died as a youth. He became King of Hawaii on 11 January 1855" (Descendants of Prince Keeaumoku I, HMS G65, Chart 8-A-2). Hawaiian Chiefs Biographical Abstract states he ascended to the throne on December 15, 1854.
Conflict: Forbes, A Chronological Table of Remarkable Events Connected with the History of the Hawaiian Islands and Thrum, Chronological Table of Important Events list marriage date to Emma on June 2, 1856.
C. Following the death of his son, he "completely lost his interest in public life, living in the upmost possible retirement until his death" (Liliuokalani, Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen, p 20).
