Sofie came from Roros, Norway, a copper mining town, Ellef went to look for work in Røros where he met Sofie. This was during the Norway Depression.

Mrs. Lovro, 87, is Last Settler
Hendricks (Special) -- Although Mrs. Sophia Lovro is 87 years old, she lives along and likes it. Mrs. Lovro is the oldest settler remaining in the region. She came to this country from Norway and has lived for 60 years on a farm near Hendricks.
She lives in a small home her sons built for her near son Even's home, and does all of her own work. She keeps busy crocheting and making rugs of many kinds. She loves flowers and takes care of her yard during the summer. She is active and alert.
Mrs. Lovro has six sons, Albert, Minneapolis; Ingvold, Emil, Martin, Sioux Falls; John, Brookings, S.D., and Even, at home.
Forty relatives and friends came Sunday to celebrate Mrs. Lovro's birthday which was May 3. Birthday cakes were baked by Mrs. Eldon Lovro and Mrs. Ingvold Lovro.

SOPHIA LOVRO HAS 90TH BIRTHDAY SUNDAY

Hendricks (Special) Mrs. Sophia Lovro was the honored guest at an open house Sunday in the Singsaas church parlors from 1 to 5 p.m. for her 90th birthday. Hostesses were her six sons who were all present with their families. They are Ingvold, Emil and Martin of Sioux Falls, Gilbert of New Brighton, John of Brookings and Even of Hendricks.
A short program was given with her grandson, Eldon Lovro, as master of ceremonies. Songs were sung by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pastor A. H. Holm gave devotions and a short talk.
Brenda Smedsrud and Gary Schafer played a clarinet duet. A reading was presented by Myron Larson and Pastor and Mrs. Holm sang "How Great Thou Art" in the Norwegian language.
At the reception which followed, the guest of honor and her immediate family were seated at the table which was decorated in blue and pink. Variegated carnations and candles with cut flowers and three tier birthday cakes served as decorations.
Mrs. Myron Larson was dining room hostess. Mrs. Martin Larson and Mrs. Bennie Hindbjorgen poured. Mrs. Gerald Schaefer and Mrs. Eldon Lovro cut and served the cake. Waitresses were Mrs. Warren Smedsrud, Mrs. Earl Lovro, LaVonne and JoAnn Lovro, Gilma Reiten and Mrs. Bennie Thoreson.
Mrs. Oscar Sandro and Mrs. Sam Borgan were in charge of the kitchen.
Gifts from Norway received by Mrs. Lovro were a white wool stole, sterling silver pin and pictures of her nephew's family. She also received a pink carnation corsage from her grandson, Jerald Lovro, and a telegram from her nephew in Oslo, Norway.
Grandchildren and great grandchildren from Brookings, Astoria, Brandt, Sioux Falls, Toronto, S.D., Ivanhoe, Canby, Minneapolis and Los Angeles, Calif., were present.
Mrs. Lovro was guest of honor at the Singsaas aid on Thursday. She received a monetary gift from the members which was presented to her by Paster Holm. He spoke in the Norwegian language.
Birthday cake was served for lunch.
Mrs. Lovro is the oldest settler remaining in this region. She came, with her husband and two sons (then age four and eight) from Norway in 1897 and has lived on the same farm since. Mr. Lovro passed away 24 years ago. She then made her home with her son, Martin.
Ten years ago Mrs. Lovro moved into a small home which was from the first home she had in America. It was later used as a granery. By adding an extra room and remodeling, she now lives in her cozy home and does her own work.
Mrs. Lovro has good eyesight and likes to read and crochet. She has completed one bedspread and has about three-fourths done on another. Also among her collection are doilies, rugs, afghans, and many others.
She loves her flowers and enjoys working outside in the summer. She is still active and alert for her 90th year.
A son and daughter-in-law live on a farm near her.
