Henry Greer

(October 11, 1769 - March 1, 1849)

"Father (Henry Greer) was born October 11, 1769. Father deceased in March the first 1849." (Actual Copy of page of Bible of Stephen Greer, owned by Charles McCulloch, Brazos County, Texas, supplied by Mrs. Olive Ruth Nabors, 704 Avondale, Bryan, Texas 77802, via Mary Lee Barnes, 1996.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: GREER KINSMEN by J. B. Bell, page 40 gives the death date for Henry Greer as 14 February 1849, which differs from the Bible date of March 1, 1849.)

"On December 6, 1819 the Legislature of the Alabama Territory established a vote precinct and seat of Justice in the home of Henry Greer in Marion County, Alabama." (THE HISTORY OF ALABAMA, Vol. II, page 942.)

"The Henry Greer that Susanna Hatcher married was the son of Benjamin Greer and his second wife Mary Haynes; born about 1771 in Bedford County, Va." (Bea O'Quin.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Many researchers have shown this Henry Greer to be the one who married Susannah Hatcher. From information received from Ann Huntsman in 1999, the Henry Greer who married Susannah Hatcher was not a son of James Greer and Ann Nancy Haynes, but, as shown by Bea O'Quin, he was the son of Benjamin Greer and Mary Haynes.)

"The family of Henry Greer removed to Mississippi around 1820 and lived on land that later became the Columbus Air Base. There is a small cemetery on this land. Henry, Sr was the inventor of the "Mississippi Rifle" which became the official rifle of the Confederacy in the Civil War. Henry Greer, Sr and his family lived near Isaac Morgan and his family in Humphrey County, Tennessee. Both families came to Monroe/Lowndes County, Mississippi and were next plantation neighbors. Two Greer sons married two Morgan daughters." (Information from Monroe County Newspaper, 2 June 1966 by George W. Howell, Jr.; "Family Records of Mississippi Revolutionary Soldiers," page 128; Greer Family research of Mr. L. L. McNees (deceased), Ebenezer, Mississippi; Joe Tillery, 5617 Earle Street, San Gabriel, California 91776 as reported in GREER KINSMEN by J. B. Bell.)

1830 Lowndes County, Mississippi census: Henry Greer, Sr: white males: 1 male age under 10, 2 males ages 10-20, 2 males ages 20-40, 1 mael age 60 and over; white females: 1 female ages 10-20, 2 females ages 20-40, 1 female age 40-60.

"Henry Greer's will is recorded in Probate Records, Lowndes County Courthouse, Vol. H, 1843 - 1849, page 511. I visited Lowndes County in August (1993) and discovered that the original will had been stolen from the county library in 1979." (David M. Greer, P. O. Box 1155, Fairbanks, Alaska 99707-1155, 1994.)

Information on the family and descendants of Henry Greer primarily from Dr. Clayton Alvis Greer of College Station, Texas, from Bible records, wills and census records, to Ellen Greer Rees shows that: "Henry Greer, Sr. married first to Susanna Hatcher in Bedford County, Virginia on 24 September 1792. He then married Susannah Tillery, according to Dr. Greer, on 14 December 1795 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Third, he married Elizabeth __________. It was not known which wives were the mothers of which children." (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Other researchers have put Susannah Hatcher as the wife of Henry Greer, son of Benjamin Greer, who was the son of John Greer and Sarah Day. With the birthdates of children as given by Dr. Clayton Greer, I feel his listing of wives is probably correct and I will list them this way in these records. Additional information about the descendants of Henry Greer is from David M. Greer, P. O. Box 1155, Fairbanks, Alaska 99707-1155, 1994. At least some of David's information is also from the work of Dr. Clayton Greer.)

LDS records show the birth date of Henry Greer to have been 10 November 1769, which disagrees with the Bible records.
