Diana "Dinah" Greer

(February 9, 1776 - 1845)

"Dianna Greer was born 20 October 1776 in Virginia, married (1) Travis George 22 Feb 1796 in Wilkes County, Georgia. He was the brother of Bailey George who married her sister, Delilah. Travis George was on the 1800 Oglethorpe County census in Captain Warters (Waters?) district with one male 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 2 females 0-10, and one female 16-26. Estate records for Travis George in Clarke County, Georgia ca. 1807. In Lt. James Greer's will in 1825 in Clarke County, Georgia, he mentions that daughter had married William Cavendish.

"In answer to a query published in Family Puzzlers, Mrs. Nina Fuller of Belton (Texas) said she had an ancestor, named Dianna, whose surname she did not know, but who had married William Cabaniss, born ca. 1768 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. He had been married several times before, and it is believed Dianna was his third or maybe fourth wife. No marriage record had been found, but from Mrs. Fuller's subsequent research we have determined this was Diana Greer.

"James Greer, Jr. had a daughter named Dianna, and in her story, it is mentioned that she went to Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, to live with an aunt where she met her husband, and married William Washington Camp. This was where Dianna Greer George and her second husband, William Cabaniss, were by 1821. William Cabaniss's will is dated 18 May 1825 in Tuscaloosa. He probably died after July of that year when he made a deed of gift to his daughter, Rutha Moor.

"The will is recorded in Will Book 2 - 1821-25 and Orphan Court 1824-31. In it, he names Dianna Cabiness as Executrix, leaving her Negro to do with as she pleases and also during her natural life to be divided at her decease, a tract of land "wherein I now live being the northwest quarter of Section Ten in Range Eleven West in Township Twenty One ..."

"Court records show Dianna Cabiness was approved Executrix in the Estate of William Cabiness and entered a bond of two thousand three hundred with Constantine P. Arthur and William G. Caragine, her securities.

"Further records show that she married Nicholas Hawkins by 1832 when Court records show that "Nicholas Hawkins (widower of sister, Pasha) "thinking it my duty to comply with contract with my wife Dianna Hawkins before we were married that I ever intended to interrupt her property that was intailed to her children, I do forever relinquish my title ... 23 Aug 1832. Witnesses: Joseph Barrett, Rutha Barrett." (Book K, page 671.) Nicholas Hawkins will was probated in Putnam County, Georgia in 1833.

"Another record states, "Cabiness, William, deceased. Dianna Cabiness, Executrix, is about to remove," and underneath this is written, "Dianna Hawkins, Executrix is cited by court."

"Diannah Hawkins bought land in Noxubee County, Mississippi in November 1834. A will exists for her in Noxubee County, Mississippi, Case No. 685. William Cabaniss was bonded in the sum of $4000 on 1 September 1845 as administrator of goods, chattel and credits account. Wm Cabaniss of the estate of Diannah Hawkins, December 7, 1846." (MY GREER LINEAGE, 1992, by Mary Lee Barnes, pages 54 - 55.)

Information about the family and descendants of Dinah Greer and William Cabiness is from Nina Cosper Fuller, as given in her 1992 manuscript of the genealogy of the Cabaniss family, supplied by Mary Lee Barnes, 1998.
