Individual Details

Stephen Erasmus Greer Sr.

(January 12, 1797 - Aft 1880)

"Stephen Greer and Anna S. Walton had a marriage license issued on 10 December 1847, no return." (Marshall County Marriage Book ?, page 161.)

"Stephen Greer was born Janary the 12 - 1802. Stephen Greer was married on december 13 1847 Anna Walton - Missippi. Married the 13 of December Stephen Greer of Arkansas to Anna S. Walton of Missippi. Stephen Greer was married on March the 13 1823 to Phobe Morgan." (Actual Copy of page of Bible of Stephen Greer, owned by Charles McCulloch, Brazos County, Texas, supplied by Mrs. Olive Ruth Nabors, 704 Avondale, Bryan, Texas 77802, via Mary Lee Barnes, 1996.)

"Bible records indicate that Stephen Greer was born in 1802, however, records in the Bibles of two of his brothers gives the date as 1797. I believe the 1797 date is correct because on the 1850 census of Bienville Parish, Louisiana, Stephen Greer is shown as being 52 years of age." (From a letter to Ralph Terry from Olive Ruth Nabors, 704 Avondale Avenue, Bryan, Texas 77802-1103, August 1998.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Information from the research notes of Mrs. Russell Bailey, Coffeeville, Mississippi, as per GREER KINSMEN by J. B. Bell, pages 40 and 43e, shows a birth date of 12 January 1797, for Stephen Greer. I don't see how the Bible record could be correct, as Stephen's brother, Joshua was born in December 1801, and this would put them being only a month apart in age.)

1850 Bienville Parish, Louisiana census, page 270, Dwelling/Family #320/320: Stephen Greer, 52, M, Farmer, 6000, GA; Anna Greer, 35, F, VA; William Little, 19, M, Laborer, TN.

1860 Brazos County, Texas census, P. O. Boonville, page 81, Dwelling/Family #712/712: Stephen Greer, 62, M, Farmer, 3000, $22570, GA; Anna S, 45, F, Housekeeper, VA; Martha Jones, 35, F, Seamstress, N. C.; Thomas Patterson, 22, M, Herd, Mo. (Stephen Greer's children, Stephen (age 14) and John (age 6) are listed in Dwelling #713.)

"Some researchers have concluded that Stephen Greer left Brazos County and died "somewhere on the Red River." (Stephen came to Brazos County in 1853.) This is incorrect information, but I believe I know how this idea came about. In Brazos County court records, Stephen Greer was arrested for allowing slaves to carry arms off his property. Although the case was taken to the Supreme Court (along with one for the same offense by Richard Carter), the verdict remained guilty. Records are too dim to read the exact outcome for Stephen Greer, but Richard Carter was fined $400 and elected to go to jail in protest. Shortly thereafter, Stephen sold some land and slaves to his second wife, Anna Walton. And he transferred ownership of over 2000 acres of land, equipment, livestock, etc. to his daughter Judith Griffith. Payment was made by her giving him title to "land on the Red River." This land was in Louisiana in Bienville Parish. But the discovery of the arrest of Stephen Greer, his subsequent sale of land and slaves to his wife and the transfer of property to his daughter in exchange for land "on the Red River" made it appear that he was ridding himself of property and perhaps leaving the area to escape the verdict. Though I do not know the location of his burial site, I feel certain that he died here in Brazos County sometime after the 1880 census." (From a letter to Ralph Terry from Olive Ruth Nabors, 704 Avondale Avenue, Bryan, Texas 77802-1103, August 1998.)

"Clayton Greer did not have information on descendants of Edward and Judith Greer because he did not discover that Stephen Greer's Bible was right here in Brazos County until he had already worked up his manuscript. The Bible is in the possession of Charles McCulloch, a descendant of Stephen Greer and Phoebe Morgan through their daughter Artillery who married William John McCulloch and also came to Brazos County. Descendants of Artillery did not know of the connection with the Griffith family here in Bryan and Brazos County - thus, when they made contact with Clayton Greer, they did not pass on to him anything about that. It was my pursuit of this that finally got all this together. I had a note in my mother's handwriting that her great grandmother was a Judith Greer - and that was all I knew for so long. Mother and a Charles Crawford knew there was "kin" somewhere but neither of them knew how nor with whom. When our local historical society published a volume about the county during our sesquicentennial celebration, there was a section on pioneer families. Charles McCulloch's wife prepared an article on the McCulloch family, detailing about Stephen Greer and his father Henry Greer. When I saw the name Artillery, my ears pricked up. Charles Crawford's mother had been referred to as "Cousin Art" - and the article indicated that "Art" was descended from Artillery and William John McCulloch. I called Mary McCulloch and asked her Artillery had a sister. She answered, "Yes, and her name was Judith." Bingo! I had made the connection to my Judith's family of Greers." (Olive Ruth Nabors, 704 Avondale, Bryan, Texas 77802-1103, in 1998.)

Stephen Greer was living in the home of his grandson, John William McCulloch on the 1880 Brazos County, Texas census. He is shown as being 80 years old.
