Masten Critcher
1816 – Oxford Dist, 1 white poll – immediately following John Critcher Note: white males 16 and over required to pay tax. He was thought to be a few years older, but perhaps he wasn’t. Proof that a Masten Critcher was present in Granville.

Also in Granville District, Orange Co, Martin Crutcher was bondsman for the marriage of Rebeccah Crutcher to Joel Hays, 15 Oct 1815. (Joel is not a name used again in my Hays family but is interesting that the Crutchers were acquainted with persons of that surname back in North Carolina.)

1836 - Henry Co, TN Tax List
District 7
Mastin Crutcher had one poll, no property.

There was a Mastin/Martin Crutcher living in Tippah Co MS in 1840.
1m under 5. prob Thomas
1m 5-10 - John
1m 40-50 - Mastin himself
1f -5 - Caroline
2f - 5-10 - Martha Frances & Eliza
2f - 10-15 - ???
1f 15-20 - Sarah could fit here or in the next group
2f 20-30 - ?? [Maria Jennie?]
1f 30-40 - Martha Longmire - 2nd wife
Charles was already married - the daughter Catherine not born until 1841.
Several daughters are unknown & most would have to be children of Polly Hancock since born prior to 1826.
Martha Frances would have been about age 7 in 1840.

1841 Mississippi State Census, Tippah Co. had Martin Crutcher with 3 males and 8 females in his household. A Nicholas "Hase" was noted in Mississippi in 1841, the only Hays found, any spelling.

"Death Notices of Tippah County, Mississippi", published by Old Timer Press in Ripley, MS had the following:
Critcher, Martin. [Probate records, dec'd 1847] Elijah P. Mitchell, Admin.
MS State Archives does not have these probate records. Records prior to 1856 are lost.

I did find a marriage record from Orange Co NC for Mastin Crutcher to Mary "Polly" Hancock on 3 July 1816. Compared to the 1840 census of Mastin Crutcher in Tippah Co, MS - this doesn't work well for the wife's age and ages of the older children in the 1840 census. Obviously Polly, the first wife has died and Mastin has remarried.

A second marriage in Granville, NC, was for Mastin Critcher to Martha Longmire, 18 Jan 1826. The bond is dated 18 Jan 1826. Mastin signed with his mark as did his bondsman, Thos. Critcher. Wm. H. Owen, Witness.

Old family tree submitted which shows Mastin (married to Martha, or Mariah Longmire) was a son of John Critcher, a brother to a Thomas Critcher, and a grandson of a Thomas Critcher - this lineage has good sources and support but if has been difficult to find direct proof linking Martin/Mastin between North Carolina and Tippah County, MS - the best sources being the tax list in Granville Co in 1816 and the War of 1812 service.
By 22 Oct of 1782, a William Longmire was living in Granville Co. DB O, p.213. Leonard Lindsey of Granville to William Longmire of same for £125 Virginia money - tract on East side Tar river, 287 acres. metes & bounds - Luke Carrol's line, spring branch to larger branch to the Tar. Signed: Leonard Linsey. Wit: Benj. Bearden, John Hawkins, Richard Searcy. Lindsey ack'd the deed, Nov Court 1782. Sarah his wife relinquished her right of dower.

1850 Tippah Co MS Census says Martha (Crutcher) Hays was born in TN. John J. Hays says his mother born Mississippi in 1900 Census.
The Crutchers are nowhere to be found in 1850 - however I did find a suspicious entry just prior to the one of Elias Hays and wife Martha.
A Martha F. with surname dittoed as Malone, is age 50, born North Carolina. She has the following children, born in TN in her household: John, 17; Caroline, 14; Thomas 13; Catharine, 10. They have no different surname - appears to be a mistake of entry.

Backtracking, here is my analysis of the 1840/41 census records and the strange one from 1850:

In 1840 Mastin Crutcher/Critcher had 3 males, 7 females
1 male, under 5, born between 1835-1840 It is possible this is the Thomas, age 13, in the household of Martha (dittoed as Malone, but possibly Crutcher) in the 1850 census next to Elias Hays & Martha Crutcher, with siblings named John, Caroline & Catherine.
1 male, age 5-10, born between 1830-1835 Could be John W. Crutcher, b. about 1832 that married Eliza Briggs
1 male, age 40-50 Mastin born between 1790-1800
1 female, under 5, born between 1835-1840 Caroline Crutcher, b. 1837 (1860 census) b. 1840 (1880 & 1900)
2 females, age 5-10, born between 1830-1835 One would be "my" Martha Crutcher Hays, b. 1833, the other unknown.
2 females, age 10-15, born between 1825-1830 Unknown. If indeed Mastin married a 2nd time to Martha Longmire in 1826 - at least one of these females could be her daughter - all the previously listed children also hers.
1 female, age 15-20, born between 1820-1825 Unknown. Mastin married to Mary Hancock in 1816 - this would be her child and well as possibly one of the two born between 1825 & 1830.
1 female age 30-40 Probably Martha Longmire and she would have been married some 24 years, so obviously very close to age 40, if not older and fudging a bit with her age.

Now in 1841 - there was one more female counted in the State census. That would be Catherine, b. Jun 1841 (1860, 1900 censuses). All of the above seems to work out fairly well. And seems to support that 1850 entry of the four siblings with a Martha - whether she should have been entered as Martha Crutcher, or whether she had married into the Malone family after the death of Mastin in 1847. Martha's age was 50 in 1850 which also matches the age 30-40 in the 1840 census and makes sense with a marriage in 1826.
