Clarinda Winkler

(Abt 1824 - 4 Oct 1912)

The husbands of Clarinda and her sister Nancy were brothers.

Gave her age as 51 in the 1880 Crawford Co AR Census - birth year of 1829. She was older. The 1850 census gives her age as 26, and she may even have been older than that.

Clarinda's household was very interesting as found in 1880. John H. is there, age 23, but not listed as a son. C. M. Rizzley is a 26 year old man who works on the farm. Several children are marked as daughter or son and surely must be grandchildren. There is a 10 year old girl, Lyly, marked as daughter. Thelma, age 6, Julia, age 8/12, Edward, age 1, and John, age 1 are all listed as illegitimate - certainly the two young boys are not likely to have been Clarinda's children. This census is faded and very difficult to read.

Aged Woman Dead
Fort Smith - Mrs. Clarinda Wood, who, had she lived, would have been 100 years old, died at her home, 509 S. 5th Street, Fort Smith. Mrs. Wood was born November 18, 1812 in Richmond, KY. [No - born about 1824!] At the time of her birth her father was an American soldier in the War of 18120 [Unproved - no indication he served]. Mrs. Wood came here in 1850. [Thomas & Clarinda were in Washington Co AR in 1850.] Mr. Wood died here in 1872 [1873]and Mrs. Wood never married again. Mrs. Wood came from a family of great longevity. Her mother, who came to America on the same ship as Lafayette, lived to the age of 99 years. [Her mother died at age 71 - her surname was Noland, her father unknown, born about 1765 she certainly did not come on the ship with Lafayette.] Her grandgmother is said to have died when she was 124 years old. [Her grandmother, Clarinda Noland died at about age 88-90] Her father, William Winkler, was an associate of Daniel Boone. [Doubful her father ever knew Daniel Boone since they weren't in the same place - AND he deserted his family falsely claiming his wife had deserted him and married a second time to a woman who already had a child by him.]
