This family is listed in the 1850 census of District 91 of Schuyler County, Missouri. At that time, they had the first 5 children listed above ranging in age from 10 to 2. Henry was listed as 31 and Arvella as 30.
In the 1860 census they were living in Prairie Township of Schuyler County, Missouri, and their post office was Greentop. Henry was listed as 44, Orvalee as 34, and they had the first 10 children listed above ranging in age from 17 years to 8 months.
Near the beginning of the Civil War, in 1861, the Winkler's teenage son, Henry Harrison Winkler, was making a trip to the mill at Fort Madison, Missouri, in Adair County, when he was confronted by a band of renegade Union soldiers called the Putnam County Malitia. They demanded he turn over his horse for the war effort. Henry refused and they shot and killed him, then rode off with his horse. Family tradition says the horse belonged to his grandmother Lydia Bennett. This death both grieved and angered the Winkler and Bennett families.
This writer's great grandmother Paulina Bennett saved a lock of Henry's hair and attached it to a piece of paper with a poem. This item was inherited by this writer.
Due in large part to this event, Orvlee's youngest "brother" in the Bennett family, Ezekiel Bennett, Jr., decided to fight for the South. Tradition has it that young Ezekiel went to Putnam County, found the malitia man who stole Henry's horse, and took the horse back from the malitia man's pasture, then rode off to war on that horse which they called "mother's old sorrell."
After the war, the Winklers moved south to Chariton County, Missouri, near the Missouri River. Henry Winkler farmed there on river bottom land. In the 1870 census, the Winklers were living in Township 53, Range 19 of Chariton County, Missouri. Henry was listed as age 50, farmer, Aralee 49, and they had 6 children still at home, Sarah 18, Martha 16, Margaret 14, Mary 12, Nancy 10, and Suminna 6. Their daughter Louisa and husband Samuel Petticord were living on the next farm.
Orvlee died in Chariton County, Missouri, in 1877. Henry was still alive at that time. It is presently unknown when Henry died.
