Reuben Popwell
(1811 - 22 Nov 1873)
According to the Heritage book of Chilton Co, Reuben's father was considerably older than his wife Margaret Charlotte and he died leaving her with six children - Reuben, Mahalia, Susan, Charlotte "Lotty", Mary Ann and James. She soon married Stephen Baker and had four sons, three daughters by him.
17 Nov 1827, Deed Book K, Darlington Co, SC. Stephen and Charlotte Baker gave to Reuben Popwell, in consideration of goodwill, our son, 8 head cattle, 1 grey filly, 13 heads of hogs, 3 beds & furniture, 100 bushels of corn.
Soon after Christmas, 1827, the Popwell-Baker family, Headleys, Mims, & Easterlings, left Darlington County in a wagon train. They are said to have arrived near Clanton, AL 9 Mar 1828.

Reuben Popwell was the chairman of a committee of four who petitioned the AL State Legislature in Dec 1868 to create Chilton Co out of Autauga, Bibb, Shelby and Perry Counties. However, it first became Baker and was later changed to Chilton Co.
