(7 Feb 1844 - 23 Jan 1931)

Married Anna Hasseltine Downs, 29 Nov 1866, Autauga Co, AL. They are buried at the Popwell Cemetery, south of Clanton.

Alfred Popwell served in the Civil War as a Private in Co E, 59th AL (formerly Hilliard's Legion) He drew a pension, as did Ann after his death.
Alfred enlisted in Apr 1862 at Cooper Station. His captain was J. F. Wise, his colonel was Bolden Hall. He was discharged Feb 1863 at Knoxville, TN on account of physical disability.
Application made 1 Oct 1923. He was age 79, 7 months, 24 days when he make application. He was never wounded, captured, nor taken prisoner. His discharge was for a natural deformity in the feet. He had lost his discharge. He had never taken an oath to any government except the Confederate States prior to 9 Apr 1865. He had lived in Chilton County, AL all of his life.
Alfred was married 29 Nov 1866; his wife was then age 82
Living children:
Fannie Thomas, age 54, public worker
L. D. Popwell, 52, jeweler
Ida Gray, 49, Farmer
D. T. Popwell, 39, Farmer
George Thomas and Lewis Easterling were his witnesses - they had known him 50 and 40 years, respectively.
Anne applied for his widow's pension on 14 Apr 1931. Alfred had died 23 Jan 1931 at Clanton. They were married at Cooper in Chilton Co and she was born 10 Oct 1841 at Loatchapoka, Macon Co AL. She was living with son D. T. Popwell. Added information about the four children: Ida was the wife of Wiley Gray; Fannie was living in Pratt City, housekeeping. She was never married to anyone else.

The actual muster cards for his service, states that Alfred Popwell was 'absent without leave from Aug 14, 1863'. It October the conclusion was that he had 'deserted'. So often the Confederate muster cards are just a reflection of whether or not a man was present, but fail to report the true reason for his absence. And then again ....some of them just walked away and went home.

....The father of Alfred Popwell was Reuben Popwell. His mother was Sally (Moore) Popwell. The Popwell family came to Alabama from South Carolina many years ago.
Mr. Popwell is survied by his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Anne Downs, a sister of Gip & Doll Downs. Their two sons are L. D. and Dutch Popwell of Clanton. They have two daughters, Mrs. Wiley Gray of Clanton and Mrs. Bud Thomas of Birmingham.
...Burial was in Popwell cemetery... cemetery where the boby lies at rest is only a few yards from the place where Alfred Popwell lived for half a century. It is surrounded by the tall pines of his own forest.

Anna's death record says that she died 27 Mar 1935, age 93, Clanton, and was buried the same day in Popwell Cemetery. Her father was Billy Downs born in Coosa Co, AL and her mother was Rebecca Bucke Halter (Burkhalter). She had been married to Alfred Popwell.
Anna is buried Popwell Cemetery in Falakto, Chilton Co. Her gravestone gives her date of death as Mar 26th which seems more likely since few people are buried on the day they died.
