Reuben Popwell

( - By 1824)

Several spellings are seen for Reuben's surname. Some believe him to be the immigrant. There is the usual "story" about his name being spelled wrong at the port and being afraid it wouldn't be legal if he changed it. Not likely! The name may have been Popplewaite or Popplewaile in England.

The Popwell-Baker Family:
The Older Reuben Popwell came from England to South Carolina in the latter half of the 18th century. He married Margaret Charlotte, maiden name not as yet proven, who was born in Virginia in 1790. Reuben was much older than his wife and he died between 1821 and 1824, leaving a widow, 2 sons, and 4 daughters. These children were Reuben, Mahalia, Susan, Charlotte (known as Lotty), Mary Ann, and James.
Following the death of the Older Reuben, Margaret Charlotte married Stephen Baker, who was born 1790 in South Carolina. This Baker family consisted of 4 sons and 3 daughters: John, Alfred, Sarah, Emily, Stephen Jr., Anderson, and Ellen...
A wagon train with the combined Popwell-Baker families, Headleys, Mims, and Easterlings, left Darlington soon after Christmas 1827. On March 9, 1828, these families arrived in the area of Clanton [then Autauga Co]. There were a number of marriages among the families who came in this wagon train.
