William Waddill Jr

( - Abt 1754)

Register of St. Peter's Parish
BIRTHS AND BAPTISMS.
[p.43] William son of Will Waddell baptiz. the 28 Aprl 1694

William is said to have served as churchwarden of St. Peter's from 10 May 1721 to 30 Jul 1722. Unless this entry specifies William Junr, and given his age I would think this much more likely still his father.

Cabell also listed another son of William and Sarah from the St. Peter's Register. I could not find anything resembling this entry in the version online:
Pridgen Waddill, born 173_ [date torn]. But this child would fit nicely between Martha and Shadrack. William Jr did have a brother Pridgen and the name doesn't seem to appear in other lines of the family.

The wife's name as Dennis is not proved by any means I have discovered. Cabell gave her name as Sarah, surname unknown.
Southside Virginia Genealogies, compiled by John W. Pritchett, suggests that Sarah was the daughter of Richard Dennis and Mary Gower; she had a brother named Gower Dennis who had patents in Henrico Co, 1751, and when found in Amelia Co, 1753, when he sold one of those patents.
The St. Peter's Parish record, New Kent Co, has a few records of Gower Dennis, showing two marriages.
Susanna, dau of Gower & Susanna Dennis, b. 14 Oct 1736; baptized 14 Nov 1736
Joseph, son of Gower & Frances Dennis, b. 26 Feb 1738; baptized 15 Apr 1738

In the book The Majors and Their Marriages by James Branch Cabell, c. 1915, he concluded that this William had gone to Charles City County. There is a land patent:
12 Mar 1739 William Waddill, 413 acres in Charles City County upon the Chickahominy Swamp adjacent to John Cocke, Edward Days, the Stony branch in Col. Carters line. 250 acres had formerly been granted to Thomas Spencer, Thomas Brookes & William Hickman which by conveyances had become vested in William Waddill and 163 acres was surplus land. Patent Book 19, p.621.
The 250 acres was part of a tract of 3300 acres, then in James City County on the Chickahominy Swamp, granted Thomas Spencer, Thomas Brookes & William Hickman on 27 Apr 1664 for transport of 66 persons, PB 5, p.163. Perhaps this large tract was in both James City & Charles City Counties since they were two of the original. One online database suggested Waddill had bought the 250 acres from John Baxter in 1725 which could be a deed found in the Charles City records. This would place him in Charles City much earlier.

His brother Pridgen was living there by 1737 and brother Jacob is said to have joined them. Family tradition said that "three brothers" had come to Charles City County.
Cabell claimed that only William left descendants in Charles City - I suspect he believed they all remained there.

However, Charles City County and Chesterfield County are adjacent to each other.
There was a William Waddill who died in Chesterfield Co. Inventory is in the Will Book 1, along with a will or estate record, p.159-161, 1754.
In Chesterfield Order Book 2, p.59, Shadrack Waddill, orphan of William was ordered bound out by the churchwardens of Dale Parish. 5 Apr 1755. Cabell had stated that this son probably died as a child - he never found the Chesterfield Co records.
Southside Virginia Genealogies, says that the will of William Waddill names sons Shadrach and Jacob - dated 14 Aug 1754, proved 4 Oct 1754. Shadrach, son of William and Sarah Waddill was born 6 Sep, baptized 4 Mar 1738, St. Peter's Parish. That would seem to tie this family together.
