Noel Waddill

(17 Aug 1730 - Bef 1773)

Southside Virginia Genealogies has attributed the following records to this Noel Waddill. I am not at all sure they are the same Noel Waddill.
1750 Noel Waddill was an overseer for John Burton, Amelia Co VA [Prince Edward Co was formed out of Amelia, 1753-4]
1752 Father Theodorick deeded 200 acres to Noel, of Amelia Co. The same tract was deed back to Theodorick, in 1754.

I suspect these next three records may be a different Noel - his uncle.
13 Jun 1755 Noel Waddill had 30 acres, New Kent Co and was of New Kent Co, 5 Feb 1755, when he purchased land both sides of Falling Creek from William Byrd.
Jul 1755 Said to be of Chesterfield Co [formed from Henrico 1749] when he purchased 524 acres on the James River from William Wiley.
9 Aug 1758 Noel Waddill of Cumberland Co [formed from Goochland 1748] purchased 100 acres on the west side of Saylers Creek from William Womack.

Back in Prince Edward Co, now formed out of Amelia Co.
13 Dec 1762 Noel Waddill purchased 25 acres from Henry Barksdale, Prince Edward Co.
15 Apr 1763 ElizabethNunn deeded 203 acres, lower side Great Creek, Prince Edward Co, to Noel Waddill.
16 Mar 1763 Noel purchased 250 acres from Joseph Nunn.
21 Feb 1764 Noel sold 250 acres to Francis Anderson of Amelia Co. There was no dower release, no wife named.
As a resident of St. Patrick's Parish, he was a processioner from Saylers Creek to the Sandy River, 1763.
Noel Waddill was reimburse for bacon and Indian corn provided the Army during the Revolution.
10 Jan 1778 Noel Waddill of Prince Edward Co, purchased 352 acres from Charles Wall, Halifax Co. He was then taxed in Halifax, 1782, 1785.
1 Dec 1792 Noel Waddill purchased 304 acres on Sandy Creek, Pittsylvania Co from Samuel Watkins - land later deeded to Levin Carter of Halifax, 14 Sep 1793.
1794 Noel and wife Martha, then residents of Pittsylvania Co, sold 402 acres in Halifax to John Cook of Lunenburg Co. Noel Waddill Jr. appears on the 1800 tax list, Pittsylvania Co.

I am not convinced that the above records as they change from Halifax to Pittsylvania Co are all the same Noel. Certainly, the Pittsylvania Co records indicate that Noel and wife Martha had a completely different set of children than those attributed to this Noel Waddill by Pritchett.

The book The Majors and Their Marriages by James Branch Cabell, c. 1915, picked this Noel as the one who patented land in Albemarle Co on 23 May 1763. This land was probably not lived on as a William Waddill petitioned for a grant for the same tract based on the fact those vested in this tract - John Waddill Jr, Abel Waddill, Pridgen Waddill, William Waddill, and Richard Adams [no doubt married to a daughter of Noel] - had failed to pay rent or make improvements. William's patent for this tract on the south fork of Cary's Creek was dated 15 Jun 1773. I have no clue if this particular William could have been the son named above or if he was the brother.

Abel Waddill apparently moved to South Carolina. He is the only Abel Waddill I can find anywhere in this time period. The Abel Waddill in South Carolina lived in Darlington, Cheraws District. His wife was Rachel Standard - they had married 15 Mar 1762 in Edgecombe Co NC. He is said to have served in the Revolution as a private in Benton's Regt, 1781. An earlier record found indexed in the SC Archives is a Judgement - John Swint vs. Abel Waddell in 1767. His estate settlement is in Darlington Co SC, about 1806. After his death his family moved to Mississippi Territory and then to East Feliciana Parish, LA. Abel Waddell received three plats of land in the Cheraws District in 1791. His son Noel appears to have been a surveyor in Darlington/Cheraws from about 1799-1807 as he appears on several plats. Noel is said to have been born 1774 and married Mary Ann Hodges - his earliest SC grant is dated in Oct of 1797 and was on Beaver Dan & Black Creeks in Darlington Co, Cheraws District. He died 1827 in Wilkinson Co MS, but his sons seem to have gone on to Louisiana.

I would think Cabell had determined which Noel might be the one in Albemarle, based on the fact he had a son Pridgen - his father had a brother by that name. His father also had a brother named John, which could explain the designation "John Jr", but of course there were multiple John Waddills.

Cabell believed this family had relocated to Charles City County after 1739. But Shadrack, orphan of William Waddill, was bound out in 1755 in Chesterfield Co. Chesterfield is adjacent to Charles City. Cabell apparently never found the Chesterfield records.
