Ebenezer Starnes

(23 Apr 1722 - Abt 1790)

The old Stearns book says that there was no known issue. States that he married after removing South, Elizabeth Young of Buncombe Co NC who was the mother of 5 children. About the time of the Revolution he moved to SC and later to Columbia Co GA where he died. This is incorrect. The Ebenezer in Columbia Co GA was a nephew, son of Peter Starnes.

Guilford Co NC Deeds; Book 1, p.265
4 Nov 1773 Ebenezer & Anne Starns his wife to Aquila Jones, all of Guilford. £90. 244 acres. Tract on branch of Sandy Creek, part of tract granted Harmon Husband from Earl of Granville on 11 Dec 1762 for 660 acres. Jno. Field's corner, orig. line, James Davies corner. Signed: Ebenezer Starns, Anne (X) Starns. Wit: James Hunter, Stephen (X) Jones. James Hunter proved Aug Court 1774.
[Aquilla Jones had received 644 acres from Harmon Husbands on 13 Nov 1764 as in the Register of Deeds for Orange Co NC. Starnes' daughter Ann married a Jones, possibly Stephen as above.]

Ebenezer and wife Anna are found living next to former Guilford Co NC neighbors, John Fields & Roger Murphy, in Laurens Co SC. in the 1780's. Both Ebenezer and Anna left wills in Laurens; he died some 12 years before Anna. They did have children.

Sadie Hoke, descendant of Ebenezer Jr. estimated birth dates from about 1760-1774 for the children. Since Ebenezer & Anna married in 1743, this seems highly improbable to me. No doubt there were other children who died young. The 1800 census shows Aaron as already over 45, or born prior to 1755.

Starns researcher and descendant of Ebenezer & Anna states that the Ebenezer who married Elizabeth Young was a nephew, son of Ebenezer's brother Peter. The children of Ebenezer Starnes & Elizabeth Young were said to be Dr. Samuel Scott Starnes, Daniel Starnes, John Starnes, Mary Starnes who married Rodham Tulloss, and Ebenezer Starnes. Census records indicate people of these names may have been born too late to have been the children of Ebenezer & Anna Field.

One of the children of Ebenezer & Elizabeth Young said to have married a Wilborn in Williamson Co TN - I'm not sure of that either - may be a later geneation.
Samuel Scott Starnes said to have married Nancy Wilborn, daughter of Gen. James Wilborn and settled in Williamson Co TN. Served in the Confederate Army.
Daniel Starnes said born 1783 married his cousin Harriet E. Russell, daughter of Capt Thomas Commander & Mary Starnes Russell of Charleston , SC. 1808-1814 he was editor of "The Mirror of the Times" in Augusta, Columbia Co GA. He died 4 Feb 1814 at age 32 in Augusta & was buried in St. Paul's Churchyard.
John Starnes said to have married a Miss Ware and settled in TN.
Mary said to have been born in 1790 and married 1810 in Augusta GA to Rodham Tulloss of TN. Supposed to be 11 children but book only lists two: Louisa & John Ebenezer.
Ebenezer said to have married a Miss Harvey.

Ebenezar Starns will dated 4 Nov 1789 names his wife as Anna. Daughters Mary who is the eldest, Anna, Rachel, Rebekah. Sons are Ebenezer & John. Exec: wife & son Aaron. Wit: Saml Wharton, John Field, Roger Murphy Sr. WB A-1, p.23
