Rev. Shubael Starnes III
(28 Jan 1706 - 20 Nov 1771)
The Rev. Shubal was a Presbyterian but embraced the Baptist principles in 1751 at Tolland in CT. He first went to Opeckon in VA, and then on to Sandy Creek, NC on 14 Nov 1755. In less than a year the Sandy Creek church grew from the original 16 members to 606 members. He died there at Sandy Creek.

The "sixteen souls" that came to Sandy Creek were Starnes - the parents [also a Shubal & his wife Rebecca] , Shubal the Rev., Ebenezer & Peter, his brothers. Daniel Marshall & his wife Martha. Enos Stimson & wife Elizabeth Stearns. Jonathan Polk & wife Rebecca Stearns. Martha, Elizabeth, Rebecca all sisters of the Rev. Shubal. Peter was married to Hannah Stimson, a sister to Enos & they were 1st cousins of the Starnes. There was one other couple that has no familial relationship known. They were basically middle aged couples with grown or nearly grown children. Those known to go on to the South Carolina backcountry were Ebenezer, Peter, Daniel Marshall & Enos Stimson.
