Individual Details

WILLIAM COREY

(1 Apr 1801 - Sep 1850)

With his brother Stephen he received from his father's will "the remainder of my farm at Washademoak, they paying my daughters Esther and Abigail each (pound symbol)15."

William is reported to have lived briefly at Lower Cambridge on the Washademoak, where he was a deacon when the Baptist Church was organized there on 5 Dec 1839. And it was there, apparently, he met and married his wife, whose family came from Washademoak Lake.

However, William returned to the New Canaan area by 1847, and it was there he was killed in 1850. William's death is reported:

24 Sept 1850: Melancholy accident in New Canaan, William Corey, while working in the woods near his home, received a blow from a falling tree which resulted in his death, left wife and family." [New Brunswick Courier, 24 Sep 1850]

After William's death, Elizabeth lived with her son, Thomas D. Corey, in Springfield NB. She was returned to the Macdonald cemetery on the northwest side of Washademoak Lake for burial, where there is a headstone for her giving her age s 63.

The case of the purloined parent

A particularly serious error of genealogy has been handed down by family tradition concerning William. Stanley Corey related it to me in this way:

Years ago Mrs Earl Stairs of Meductic NB, showed me a family account which both surprised and shocked me. It was an account of William Corey, son of Gideon, and his descendants. Perhaps you have seen it. According to this account, William at one time lived in Carleton County, and on 2 Aug 1819 married Abigail Skidgill in Woodstock. I realized at once when I read that, that someone had tried to steal my great-great-grandmother Corey. I have seen that church record a d have a certified copy of it. The name of the groom was clearly Thomas Cory, and the date of the marriage was indeed 2 Aug 1819. So someone had seen that church record, but had decided to substitute the name of William Corey for Thomas Cory . I'm glad that you know that William Corey, son of Gideon, married Elizabeth Macdonald. There is no evidence that William Corey was ever in the area that became Carleton County.

Elizabeth died 11 Jan 1867 at Springfield NB, where she was living with a son, probably William, who was a Baptist minister there.
