Individual Details
ELISHA CLARKE COREY
(Ca 1784 - Ca 1836)
Elisha was amongst the list of those first settlers who obtained a grant of land at New Canaan on 2 Oct 1809. This grant was to lot 3 and consisted of 215 acres, and it is presumed he settled on and improved that land until 1824, when he inherited lot 13 from his father.
The Will of Gideon Corey provided for his son Elisha, "one-third of my farm at New Canaan, one cow, and my iron tooth harrow." Elisha farmed the rest of his life in New Canaan NB.
Elisha married Bright Wright, presumably by 1811 or early 1812, but the marriage record has not been found.
Stanley Corey said Elisha died "about 1836" when he would have been only about 52 years of age. But this date is unsupported, as far as I know, by any proof, and in the lack of any evidence, it is possible that Elisha was still alive in 1840, and that he could have been the father of Alfred.
If Elisha did die in 1836, Bridget would have had some very younf children to raise. Only two of her children were married then, and the rest were between the ages of 18 and 2. By usual practices of the time, she may then have lived with one of her married children, who at the time were son John, or daughter Sarah Ann.
Date of birth for Bridget is unknown, but critical in considering Alfred's birth in 1841. She presumably married in 1812, when she was probably between the ages of 15 and about 20. If so, by 1840 she would have been at least 43 years of age, and possibly as old as 48, or even older. The question as to whether she could have borne a child in 1841is therefore of considerable importance in considering the parentage of Aldred. A statement of age shown in the LDS data files giving a year of birth at "[1786]", is apparently a guess, but if it were correct, it would have Bridget marrying at the age of 26, and by 1840 she would have been far beyond her child bearing years.
In any case, after the birth of Alfred in 1841, there is no further record of Bridget. [Corey Book]
