STEPHEN COREY

(4 Apr 1797 - 6 Nov 1840)

With his brother William he received from his father's will "the remainder of my farm at Washademoak, they paying my daughters Esther and Abigail each (pound symbol)15."

Stanley Corey writes, "Stephen Corey, born 4 April 1797, married Sarah Cyphers Brown on 8 Sept 1818. (His date of birth comes from Mrs. Earl Stairs of Meductic NB, and the year of birth is supported by a memorial.) Stephen Corey is not named in R.H. Corey in his list of the children of Gideon Corey, but Stephen was named in Gideon's will, and the memorial of 1815 in behalf of Gardner and Stephen Corey states that both were sons of Gideon Corey, and Stephen and wife Sarah are included in the deed of 1827. There is no question but that Stephen was the son of Gideon and Abigail (Clark) Corey. Stephen and Sarah moved to Carleton County, and Stephen died there in either the Parish of Wakefield or the Parish of Woodstock in 1840. His will dated 30 October 1840 was probated 28 November 1840 at Woodstock." He was apparently twin to Abigail, though no family tradition supports this.

He married in 1818 Sarah Cyphers Brown, and settled on Washademoak Lake, where, on 11 Nov 1823 Stephen Corey "became 2nd Deacon" of the Washademoak Baptist Church. However, at some point the family moved to Carlton County, and settled at Jacksontown, near Woodstock. It was here that disaster struck this family in 1840. The terse news report of 24 November 1840 gave the brief details:

d. Jacksontown, Carlton County, 29th ult, age 21, Mary Abigail Corey: on 6th inst., Stephen Corey, aged 43; on 8th inst, Lucy Emeline, age 2 yrs 6 mos - being the father and oldest and youngest daughters - all of typhus fever.

Dr. Stanley Corey of Green Valley, Arizona, had located descendants of Stephen, now living in California.
