He is said to have gone to California "during the gold rush." As the California gold rush took place in 1849, when Alexander was about nine, that part of the story in unlikely. Of course, he may well have gone to California at a later date, or possibly went to the British Columbia gold rush of 1859, when he would have been nineteen.
