The death of Peter J. Zierden, 82 years, occurred at his farm home a mile south of New Munich at 10:20 am on Monday, October 25. He suffered a stroke recently and was ill the past two weeks. The funeral was held this Thursday morning at nine o'clock at the Immaculate Conception church at New Munich, with the pastor, Rev Hugo Tell, OSB, officiating.
Peter Zierden was born in Oak Township May 13, 1866. In 1877 he left with a number of others from the New Munich community for St. Joseph, Florida to engage in fruit farming. He married Theresis Nierman there on September 23, 1888 and Mr. Zierden spent 9 1/2 years in Florida and then returned to Minnesota to farming near New Munich. Mrs. Zierden died there Feb 15, 1934. A son, Peter, died the same year at the age of 32 years.
The children surviving are: Mathias of New Munich, Sister Annina, OSB, of St. Joseph, Joseph of St. Paul, Sister Edicta, OSB of Ogden, UT, and Aloys of Albany. There are 33 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Anna Terhaar of Mt. Angel, OR also survives. The deceased was a member of the St. Joseph Men's Society.
Hubert Zierden was crossbearer and the pallbearers were: Jerome, Arthur, Edmund, Walter, Lawrence and Robert Zierden, all grandsons of the deceased. Honorary pallbearers were: Anton Massman, Henry Holtvogt, Herman Behnen, Theo Wiebold, George Linz and Anton Kleve.
