Rose Anna "Sister Edicta" Zierden

(September 1, 1901 - April 8, 1982)

MARY THE ANGELS LEAD HER INTO PARADISE

Sister Edicta (Rose Anna) Zierden, 81, died at St. Scholastica Convent at 11:45 pm on Holy Thursday, April 8, 1982. Her many years of suffering from complications of diabetes were climaxed three weeks ago previously by a severe stroke.

Rose Anna Zierden was born in New Munich, Minneosta, on September 1, 1900, the fourth child of Peter and Theresa (Nierman) Zierden. Her father also was born in New Munich, her mother in Ibbenburen, Germany. Sister Edicta attended elementary school in New Munich and high school at St. Benedict's after entering the Scholastiticate in August, 1915. She received the habit on June 19, 1917, made first vows on July 11, 1918, and celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 1968. Sister Edicta's first assignments after making vows were teaching the 4th, 5th and 6th grades at St. Mary's in St. Cloud and Watkins.

Nurses were scarce in 1932 and Sister Edicta again became a student, this time at St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing. She received her diploma and nurse registration in 1936. This was followed by enrollment at St. Louis University where she received the bachelor of science degree in nursing in 1938. Returning to St. Cloud Hospital, Sister Edicta filled the posts of instructor and operation room supervisor until April, 1945, when she was chosen to be one of the pioneers i establishing the community's new mission in Odgen, Utah. She helped plan the first St. Benedict's Hospital, served as operation room supervisor until 1963 and as assistant supervisor and Sister Visitor until 1974 when she retired to St. Raphael's Home because of increasing blindness. As a Sister Visitor her warm personality and sensitivity to the suffering of others made her welcome everywhere. She seemed able to give everyone whatever comfort and encouragement was needed.

Sister Edicta is the last member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her older sister, Sister Annina of our community, and four brothers. A wake was held at St. Scholastica convent on Easter Monday, April 12. and a wake service at St. Benedict's at 7:00 pm the same day. The Mass of Resurrection was celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 13, in Sacred Heart Chapel.

We are confident that Sister Edicta has entered into the fullness of the Paschal mystery of Christ and will rejoice with Him forever. Sister Katherine Howard and Sisters of St. Benedict's Convent, St. Joseph, Minnesota.
