Marvin Leland BROWN

In the 1850 Census he is living with his parents in Ellery, Chautauqua County, New York.
In the 1860 Census he is living with his parents in Clayton, Crawford County, Wisconsin.
On 27 Apr 1862 he married Margaret A. Coleman in Clayton Center, Crawford County, Wisconsin performed by Samuel H. Whiteaker and witnessed by Jacob C. Coleman and D. Mook; registered on 26 May 1862.
In the 1870 Census he is living in Wagner, Clayton County, Iowa with his wife Margaret and children Ina, George, Fannie, and Cora..
In the 1880 Census he is living with his family in Haney, Crawford County, Wisconsin.
He was drafted into the Army for the purpose of serving in the Civil War on 20 Mar 1865 to serve one year and was discharged 20 Apr 1865 by reason of an order from the Provost Martial General dated 14 Apr 1865. He was listed as a private and an Unassigned Wisconsin Volunteer (drafted man) Infantry in the 3rd District Wisconsin. He stated in a affidavit of 29 Jan 1896 that on his way home to Boscobel, Grant County, Wisconsin he came down with a disease. In a variety of affidavits by doctors, family, and friends it is stated he was brought home from the war and that he had lung hemorrhage. He was unable to do any manual labor since 1865 and he was suffering from a severe lung hemorrhage, chronic rheumatism in low back, ankles and knees. He also had severe hemorrhoids and chronic kidney disease. Later in life and in another doctor's affidavit filed 28 Jun 1892 the above illnesses were substantiated but also he developed heart disease. On 23 Sep 1892, while living in Haney, Crawford County, Wisconsin [Post Office, Bell Center, Crawford County, Wisconsin], he filed for a pension as a invalid from his service in the Civil War [Case Number 1136396]. This claim was rejected on 23 Oct 1893 because he could not provide evidence diseases were related to his service. On 13 Dec 1894 he again filed for a pension. This claim was rejected on 25 Jun 1895 because claimant did not serve 90 days as shown on War Department records. After more lawyer inquiries he was again informed 16 Nov 1897 that his claim was rejected. After more documents were submitted his claim was reopened on 13 Jan 1898 but on 26 Jul 1898 it was canceled. On 1 December 1900 his daughter, Fannie, wrote the wife of the President William McKinley prompted more affidavits but the record shows no response either to Fannie or Marvin. On 13 Mar 1922, his wife Margaret filed a claim for pension and this was rejected on 19 Jul 1922. On 8 Aug 1927 Margaret filed another claim for widow's pension which was rejected on 9 Sep 1927. On 16 Apr 1928, US Congressman Thomas Hall requested the Marvin L. Brown file so he could introduce a special bill in behalf of Margaret Brown. There is no evidence in the file that this was accomplished.
In a 5 Apr 1893 physical examination it states he is 5 feet, 8 1/2 inches tall and weighs 125 pounds and in an 18 Apr 1893 letter, he indicates he is living in Bell Center, Wisconsin.
In a 13 Dec 1894 pension claim document he indicates he is living in Bell Center, Wisconsin, post office Gays Mills, Crawford County, Wisconsin.
In a 29 Jan 1896 pension claim document he indicates he is living in Gays Mills, Crawford County, Wisconsin.
In a 24 Nov 1897 pension claim document he indicates he is living in Haney, Crawford Co, WS, post office Bell Center, Wisconsin.
In the 1900 Census he is living in Dazey, Barnes County, North Dakota with his wife, Margaret and daughter Annie in the home of his daughter Fanny and her husband George Laing.
In the 1910 Census he indicates he is 72 years old, his birthplace is New York, married 49 years, and is living in Dazey, Barnes County, North Dakota with his wife, two sons, and a daughter and working as a self-employed gardener, owns his house and is a survivor of the Civil War. Living next door is his granddaughter, Ellora Stevens, her husband Roy Freeman and great-grandson, Leland Woodburn.
Although Marvin suffered from many diseases as outlined above, his death certificate indicates he died of heart trouble..
