Individual Details
Anna (Annie) Nora BROWN
(2 Mar 1889 - Jan 1952)
Anna was more commonly called Annie. Her sister's obituary indicates her name as Nora Ann. She was never married.
The 1900 Census shows her living in Dazey, Barnes County, North Dakota with her parents in her sister Fannie's home.
The 1910 Census shows her as living with her parents and two brothers and unemployed.
The 1920 Census shows her as living with her mother and brother and employed as a telephone operator.
The 1925 North Dakota state census shows living in Dazey with her mother.
Dazey published a book for their centennial which contained an article on Anna which is provided below. It indicates she came with her parents to Dazey in 1902, however, she is on the Dazey 1900 census. Anna and her mother are in the 1920 Dazey census so it is assumed they moved to Mercer, McLean County, North Dakota after 1920 and Anna returned sometime after her mothers death in 1929.
When she lived in Dazey, it is believed her property was large enough to have a barn and a well which she shared with the neighbors.
An article is quoted from the Dazey, Our Heritage 1883-1983 book:
"ANNA NORA BROWN
Anna Brown was born in Wisconsin March 2, 1889. She came to Dazey with her parents in 1902. Her legs were paralyzed from an injury so she was always in a wheelchair.
She and her mother and her brother George lived in a house close to the old ball park west of the school house. Often the school children would go over to Browns on a nice warm day to try to get Anna's parrot to talk but he was stubborn.
Anna was the telephone operator in Dazey until she and her mother moved to Mercer in 1912 where she was also the telephone operator. It was a familiar sight to see someone pushing Anna on the streets in Dazey.
After the death of her mother she returned to Dazey and lived with her brother George.
She passed away at Mercy Hospital in Valley City in January 1952."
She had to use a wheelchair due to a spine injury. When she was about five years old she was sliding down a staircase banister and landed on her spine causing an injury that would not allow her to walk again. The injury and her age at injury is confirmed by a letter to the wife of President McKinley on 1 December 1900 written by her sister Fannie.
For years one of her great companions was her dog "Puckie."
