HSO, 16Nov1939. Local News
Mrs. Joe Gartman and family will leave Friday for Mitchell, South Dakota, where they will establish their new home. Mr. Gartmann preceded his family to begin his new work. Robert Gartman will drive out with them.
The family is back in Hudson in April 1940 where they are enumerated in the 1940 census. The next month, May 1940, both Joe and Gen were godparents for Nancy Gartmann at St. Patrick's church, Hudson.
The Gartmann home and store were at 803 Orange St., an Italianate style house built by Herman Humphrey, a Hudson attorney, in 1860.
I recall that before we got a television, we would often to go Joe and Gen's so my dad could watch the fights with Joe. Gen would usually serve coffee and a light lunch of some kind. Peggy, Gene and Dick would sometimes be there also, but being a few years older than us were usually busy with their friends and activities. This would have been in the early 1950's. I also recall being sent to the Gartmann store for milk or some other item by my grandmother (Karine) on those occasions when I would spend a few days or a week at her house, and how Gen would always send me back with a special treat of some kind. My mother provided farm fresh eggs to their store.
