Individual Details
Anna Friend
(7 Aug 1868 - 10 Jan 1957)
Theresa recalled her mother talking about Michigan where she met her brother, Max, before both of them came to Hudson. Theresa thought she may have worked in a boarding house there. In the 1900 Federal Census for St. Joseph Township, she stated she had emigrated in 1885 and had been in the U.S. fifteen years; and in the 1910 Federal Census stated she emigrated in 1886.
Research into ship passenger lists (P74-4647, WSHS) and Filby's "Germans to America" show Anna to have emigrated in 1885.
Ship: German Str. EMS, W. Willigerod, Master
Port of Embarkation: Bremen
Date of Arrival: May 16, 1885
Anna Freund, age 17, Female, Citizen of Germany, Second cabin, one piece of baggage, "transient Altmansdorf", destination, United States; 1088 adults, 288 children, 60 others; total 1436 passengers.
The EMS was built by John Elder & Co., Glasgow, for Norddeutscher Lloyd (North German Lloyd). She was 4,730 tons, 429.8 by 47 feet (length and beam); straight bow, two funnels, four masts, iron construction, screw propulsion, service speed 16 knots. She had accommodations for 125 in 1st class, 130 in 2nd class and 1,000 in 3rd class. She was launched February 27, 1884 and made her maiden voyage from Bremen/Southampton to New York in June 1884. She was scrapped in 1905.
As noted, although the EMS was only a year old, she was carrying nearly 200 more passengers than designed for. We can assumeaccommodations were crowded.

Theresa and I were talking about Thanksgiving and how we had all been together at our house and how much she had enjoyed it. She said her mother used to invite her aunt Tillie and family for Thanksgiving, and at other times, and with a crowd that size the kids, Gustie, Margaret, Theresa, had to sit at the "second table", after the grown folks had all eaten. One year the kids persuaded their mother not to invite anyone-- Thanksgiving by themselves so everyone could eat together at "the first table". The following Sunday her mother invited everyone to come for a "second Thanksgiving". It was the last time they had Thanksgiving without the whole family. She said her mother enjoyed cooking and parties and always had the family there. Living on the farm they had the milk, meat and eggs that were sometimes scarce to those living in town.
She told me about the time they (the kids) invited all their friends from North Hudson and around to come for a dance in the dining room. Her mother told them that they would have to get up early the next morning and scrub the floor. She said when they got up and looked at the floor, it was snow white from all the dancing the night before.
