The Wisconsin State Sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis was located near Wales in Waukesha county. It opened with 40 patients in November 1907. Patient capacity grew from 89 beds in 1909 to 240 beds in 1939. Anyone who was more than sixteen years of age and who had lived in Wisconsin for at least one year prior to application could be admitted for observation or treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. Only patients in the early or moderately advanced stages of tuberculosis were admitted. The fee ($15 a week in 1929) covered medical and nursing care, food, lodging and laundry.
The Sanatorium grounds extended over 200 acres of wooded hills insuring a plenitude of the curative agents of the time-- sunshine, fresh air, rest and nourishing food. The patients lived in cottages with broad verandas. The Sanatorium had a library, offered motion pictures and other entertainment, and held both Catholic and Protestant church services on Sunday.
