In a late 1980's conversation with Gen -- "My grandmother was born in Ireland --my grandfather was Patrick Haggerty -- he left Ireland -- he had been fishing where he shouldn't have been fishing -- so he packed up and left -- went to Shieldsville, Minnesota, that's near Faribault -- one daughter was born and died in Ireland -- told his wife he'd send for her -- a son Pat was born in Ireland. My grandparents were Catholic -- my father was a stone mason -- laid cornerstones for the Catholic church and the Baker house at 9th & Vine -- lived on Dupont avenue -- moved to North Hudson when North Hudson was still prairie, just a few houses -- lived out near Hudson dump --that place burned down -- moved into North Hudson. Leo's [Leo Axt] son Otto supposedly came to Menomonie area -- Aunt Mattie, her name was Martha, I think she was older than Otto."

Ithalia Genevieve (Gen) Gartmann, 86, of Hudson, died Sunday, January 21, at Christian Community Home where she had been a resident for the past 23 months. She was born in Minneapolis, October 31, 1903, the daughter of Leo and Sarah (Haggerty) Axt. She attended school in North Hudson and did waitress work in Hudson at the Candy Box Cafe that was owned by Harry and Norma Golberg. On August 16, 1930, in Hudson, she was married to Joseph Gartmann, who died in 1959. For a number of years she did sewing for various people and in 1943 she and her husband purchased the Dailey Grocery and Confectionery store at Eighth and Orange streets, which they operated until 1971. Besides being a skilled seamtress, she was known for her ability to make her own greeting cards. Surviving are three sons, William Shern of Russell Springs, Ky., Robert [Gene] Gartmann of Hudson and Richard Gartmann of Honolulu, Hawaii; a daughter, Mrs. Sherman (Peggy) Sutter of Hudson Township; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, January 24, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The Hope Choir sang and Elsie Sandquist was organist. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery where pallbearers were Gregory, Steven and Mark Sutter, and Michael, David, Peter and Richard Gartmann. Honorary pallbearers were William Shern and Jon Shern.
