In 1960 the original building was demolished and on one of the timber beams the following inscription was found "Knight, the builder of Wauchope House"
Note (fam)1850In the 1850's the first white settlement occurred at Wandandian when the Walsh and Kerwick families took up land on the Wandandian Creek and settlement was made at Jerrawangala about 7-km further south by Andrew McKenzie, John Higgins and George Knight (probably about 1857 in George's case) - Rebecca DEARLING
Note1 Dec 1854On the 1st & 2nd Dec 1854 George was involved in a very strange land transaction. On the 1st "Bryce, Adolphus William & Billyard, William Whaley & Bryce, Alexander & Bryce, William sold to Knight, George" the land "850a Jerrawangla c/o St Vincent, N by pt of 2nd Section Line S of WandandianVillage reserve, E by Wandandian Creek, being Lot 17 in advert 23/11/1839 & granted to Chas John Campbell 30/04/1840". On the following day "Knight, George sold to Young, Adolphus William" the same land. Very puzzling and as yet unexplained
Living (fam)1856Jerrawangala, New South Wales, Australia - Rebecca DEARLING
Note1858The Illawarra Mercury of 8 Jul 1858 reported that George spoke at a public meeting in Ulladulla for the Total Abstinence Society. He "gave a vivid outline of the evil effects intemperence had had on his life at one period. He had not put his hand to the cup of sin for many years"
Note1859When George moved what became known as Milton it was called The Settlement. The Examiner (Kiama) of 17 Dec 1859 describes a petition, signed by 120 men, presented to the court in favour of George Knight's residence, which was called 'Milton', being selected as the site of the new Post Office. Although the court didn't rule in their favour on the day George did become Mitlon's first postmaster with the Post Office in his house. This lends substantial weight to the town subsequently being named after George's house
