Note1820We know from the Petworth Tax Assessment Roles that around 1814 he became the publican of the White Hart inn in Petworth and bought the pub 1818/1819. Knight family folk law suggests that he relinquished his licence to his brother George around this time because of "irregularities". Certainly in the 1819 Tax Assessment Roles Joseph owned the White Hart & George was the publican but only a year later George both owned and operated the pub. George was still listed as the landlord in the 1841 Census & willed the White Hart to his daughters in 1854
Note28 Sep 1820On 28 Sep 1820 Joseph was a party to an assignment of leasehold of the East Walls Chapel (Methodist) in Chichester. The property was transferred from the Rev James Lancaster & Thomas Astbury to John Shum, a gent from Bath in Somerset, Joseph Knight, brewer of Petworth plus John Wyatt, hairdresser, George Ulgham, brush-maker, Thomas Williams, bookseller and William Wyatt, hair-dresser, all of Chichester

The Copper holds seven Barrels, without the curb, and a Mash Tun, 80 Bushels"
