| Note | 1820 | We know from the Petworth Tax Assessment Roles that around 1814 he became the publican of the White Hart inn in Petworth and bought the pub 1818/1819. Knight family folk law suggests that he relinquished his licence to his brother George around this time because of "irregularities". Certainly in the 1819 Tax Assessment Roles Joseph owned the White Hart & George was the publican but only a year later George both owned and operated the pub. George was still listed as the landlord in the 1841 Census & willed the White Hart to his daughters in 1854 | | | |

| Note | 1825 | Joseph's brewing interests continued until 1825 when an advertisement in the Sussex Advertiser of Monday 7 Feb 1825 appeared offering for sale or lease "A small brewery with a cellar, casks and utensils; and with or without a Dwelling house and Vault, and part of a garden, adjoining the said brewery. The Copper holds seven Barrels, without the curb, and a Mash Tun, 80 Bushels" | | | |
