Death
GARDEN CITY BEACH | Homer Lee Furr, 88, of Garden City Beach, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Waccamaw Community Hospital. He was born April 15, 1914, in Locust, N.C., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Furr of Stanfield, N.C. He was a 1939 graduate of Stanfield High School, turning down a basketball scholarship to accept a job in law enforcement. He served as deputy sheriff in the Stanfield area and also served as police chief in Oakboro, N.C., in 1938-1939. At the same time, he worked third shift as a patrolman with the Albemarle (N.C.) Police Department. He was promoted to sergeant in the 1940s and made lieutenant in 1954. He has more than 24 diplomas and certificates for completing training courses in Charlotte, N.C., at the Institute of Government in Chapel Hill, N.C., and other places. He also studied 12 weeks at the University of Kentucky. His law enforcement career spans 42 years. He was a member of Belin Memorial United Methodist Church. He took great pride in being a former member of the Albemarle Optimist Club, where he was voted ''Optimist of the Year.'' He has been a resident of the area since 1978 after moving from Albemarle, where he resided most of his life. He was the widower of Minnie Efird Furr. Survivors include his daughter, Rickie Williams of Myrtle Beach; close companion, Hazel Hendricks of Surfside Beach; brother, Clayton Furr of Charlotte; and sister, Margie Hatley of Asheboro, N.C. Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, beach chapel. Memorials may be made to Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 528, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.
