Emma Josephine Dilts

Emily Josephine Dilts was born 6 August 1862 (one descendant says 10 August 1861) in Henry County, Iowa and died 26 December 1932. She married on 27 October 1881 to Owen Albright Garretson, son of Joel C. and Elizabeth (Goodson) Garretson. Owen was born 23 January 1852 in Iowa and died 3 February 1932 (or 5 February 1933). they lived in Jackson Township, Henry County, Iowa. Owen was a gentleman farmer, a writer, and a historian. He was active in politics, head of the Henry County Board of Supervisors, a trustee of Whittier College, and a frequent contributor of articles to the Iowa Journal of History and Politics and other scholarly publications. Both Owen and Emma are buried in the Friends Cemetery in Salem, Iowa.

Mount Pleasant News, Friday, December 30, 1932, Page 4, Col. 4: Mrs. Garretson Rites At Salem. Services Held At Methodist Church On Thursday Afternoon. Salem---Funeral services for Mrs. O. A. Garretson who passed away at the home of her son, Dr. Howard Garretson in Mt. Pleasant, early Monday morning were held at the Salem Methodist Episcopal church, Thursday December 29 at 2 p.m. The church was filled with her many friends both of Mt. Pleasant and Salem, who had come to pay their last respects to this noble woman. An abundance of flowers formed a background and she rested on the casket. Mr. and Mrs. Leon Smith sang very beautifully, "Some Time We'll Understand," and "Abide with Me," with Mrs. A. J. Lee accompanying on the piano. The members of the Salem Woman's club of which she was a member attended in a body. The services were in charge of Mrs. Laura B. Galer of the Universalist church of Mt. Pleasant who spoke from John 14. Following the reading of the obituary, Mrs. Galer read two beautiful poems, "There is no Death, " and "My Own Shall Come Unto Me," bringing out the thought of the capacity the deceased had so well filled in her home and with her loved ones. This part of the services was completed by the reading of "When I Have Crossed the Bar." Emma J. Dilts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dilts, was born near Lowell, Ia. in Baltimore township, Henry Co., August 10, 1861 and passed away at the home of her son, Dr. Howard Garretson Monday Dec. 26, 1932, age 71 years, 5 months and 16 days. When nine years of age she moved with her parents to Jackson Township near the Donnellson Chapel. She was united in marriage to Owen A. Garretson, Oct. 27, 18981 and to this union were born six sons. The husband and the following sons survive: Sumner D. Garretson of near Salem, Owen Alvin Garrets on St. Paul, Minn., Dr. Howard Garretson and Gilbert Garretson of Mt. Pleasant and Herman Garretson of San Francisco, Cal. One brother, Dr. W. a. Dilts of Indianola, also survive. One son, Dr. Wendell Garretson, a sister Laura Dilts and a brother, Dr. John Dilts preceded her in death.
