Joel Howard Garretson was born 26 June 1890 and died on 14 August 1953. On 26 August 1919 he married May A. Johnson of Forsyth, Rosebud County, Montana, who was born on 14 May 1895 and died in 1988. He was an osteopathic physician, first in Salem and then in Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa. Joel and May are both buried in the East Cemetery in Salem, Iowa. He was the twin of Herman John Garretson.

Obituary from the Mount Pleasant News, Wednesday Evening August 12, 1953: Dr. Garretson Dies Suddenly. Dr. J. H. Garretson, 63, a prominent osteopathic physician in Mount Pleasant and Salem for 31 years died suddenly of a heart attack at his home six miles southeast of Salem at 11 p.m. Tuesday. His death came at a shock since he was not ill before the attack. He was stricken shortly after retiring. A doctor was called but Dr. Garretson was dead when he arrived. Mrs. Garrteson, her mother Mrs. C. J. Johnson, and the Garretson's daughter Josephine were at home at the time. Funeral services will be held at the Crane funeral home Friday at 1 p.m. Interment will be in the Salem cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home. Joel Howard Garretson was born near Salem, June 26, 1890, the son of Owen A. and Emma Dilts Garretson. He attended Iowa Wesleyan college for two years and then attended the Kirkville College of Osteopathy at Kirkville, Mo. graduating in 1916. He started his practice in Forsyth, Mont., that year and while there met his wife, the former Mae A. Johnson. The couple returned to Henry County in 1922 and he practiced at Salem for a few years and then in Mount Pleasant since that time. his office was on the east side of the square. The Garretsons lived in Mount Pleasant until 1933 and then moved to the country home near Salem. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, the Salem Masonic lodge and the Eastern Star. Surviving besides Mrs. Garretson and Josephone M. at home, are two sons, Charles O. of Mount Plesant and Joel H. Jr. of Salem, another daughter Mrs. Virginia Woolls, Salem; a twin brother Herman J. of Pasadena, Calif., and several grandchildren and nephews. Four brothers preceded him in death. They were Wendell A., Gilbert I., Sumner D. and Owen A. Garretson.
