Posted at Find A Grave.com: Joel Howard Garretson Sr., 88, of rural Salem, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Born Sept. 24, 1924, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Joel Howard and May Martina Johnson Garretson. On Sept. 27, 1947, he married Joyce Kathleen Stuart in Mount Pleasant. Mr. Garretson farmed, worked in the carpentry trade and was a vocational instructor in building trades at Southeastern Community College, teaching at Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison. He grew up on the family farm southeast of Salem, attended Glendale country school and in 1942, graduated from Mount Pleasant High School where he played on the football team. He attended Iowa Wesleyan College and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He served from June 1943 to November 1945 in the Army Air Corps as a flight officer and pilot of the B-26 Martine Marauder. He was a member of American Legion Simkin-Pidgeon Post 94 of Salem and an Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He enjoyed mushroom hunting in the "timber", woodworking and projects in his shop, gardening, canning and working in his orchard. He planted many fruit and nut bearing trees and a variety of trees and berries on the farm. He especially enjoyed visiting with friends and family. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Joel Garretson Jr. and Robert Garretson, both of Salem; one daughter, Cathy Helman of Salem; one sister, Josie Bainter of Salem; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, his parents, one sister and one brother. No visitation is planned. The graveside memorial service for Mr. Garretson will be at a later date in Salem East Cemetery in Salem. Memorials have been established for Salem Crew Public Library and Salem East Cemetery. Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant is in charge of arrangements.
