Garretson, 62, of rural Salem, died at 5:18 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, 1989, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Iowa City. Born Jan. 13, 1927, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Dr. Joel H. and May A. Johnson Garretson. He was a 1944 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1948 from the University of Iowa. He received his juris doctorate in 1951 from the University of Iowa law school. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and in the U. S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He returned to Mount Pleasant and practiced law. He was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Mount Pleasant. He was a member of the Henry County and the Iowa bar associations and the Salem American Legion Post. He was a former Henry County Attorney and a past member of the Mount Pleasant Masonic Lodge No. 8.
Surviving are one brother, Joel H. Garretson, rural Salem and two sisters, Mrs. Virginia (Floyd) Woollis, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Mrs. Josie (Harlan) Bainter, rural Salem. Visitation will begin at noon Monday at the Weir Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant. The service for Garretson will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the Mt. Michael's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Wayne Kamm officiating. Burial will be in Salem East Cemetery, Salem. A memorial has been established for the Salem East Cemetery Association.
