Herman John "Gary" Garretson

Herman John Garretson was born 26 June 1890, and according to the Social Security Death Index, he died in December 1972. He married on 23 April 1917 to Marion Becker of Salem, Henry County, Iowa, who was born 15 September 1895 and died on 1 December 1925. She is buried in the Friends Cemetery in Salem, Henry County, Iowa. On 14 January 1933, Herman married for a second time to Helen Huston of Seattle, King County, Washington, who was born 31 December 1894. He was a college football coach and held many athletic honors. Later he founded Garretson Mortgage Company of Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California. He was the twin of Joel Howard Garretson.

Garretson, who was 82, died Friday while undergoing treatment for cancer. Services were held at Forest Lawn in Glendale. He was president of the Garretson Mortgage Co., and early in his career director of athletics at Parsons College and Wesleyan College, both in Iowa. His son, Gen. Frank E. Garretson, was commander of the Third Marine Division that served in Vietnam. His immediate survivors include his widow, Helen; sons, Herman of Seattle, Wash, Ronald of Pasadena, and Frank, of San Diego; and 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
