Sumner Dilts Garretson was born 6 August 1881 in Henry County, Iowa, and died 29 September 1943 in Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa. On 31 July 1906 he married Florence White of Salem, Henry County, Iowa. In addition to farming, Sumner operated a real estate business in Mount Pleasant for several years. He also served as an inheritance tax appraiser, as an Iowa Federal Housing Administration appraiser, and as a Federal Land Bank appraiser. During World War II, from January 1942 until his death, he was a member of the Henry County Rationing Board. He was also a director of the Garretson Society.

There were six (6) children born of the marriage.

On the 1930 U. S. Census of Jackson, Henry Co., Iowa, Sumner D. Garretson appears with his wife Florence D. and children Loren O., Doris D., and Keith. Sumner is a farmer. The household after is his parents', Owen A. and Emma J. Garretson.
