William Amos Dilts

William A. Dilts was born 13 January 1860 in Louisa County, Iowa, and died 11 July 1935 in Salem, Iowa. William was a physician and surgeon in Salem, Henry Co., Iowa. He attended Whittier College, Salem, Henry Co., IA, beginning in 1878 and in 1882 he began the study of medicine with Dr. E. W. Cook of Salem, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa medical department in 1883-4 and subsequently studied at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk, Iowa, graduating in 1887. He married 16 March 1887, Nellie E. Donaldson, daughter of the Rev. David and Rebecca Donaldson. Donaldson was a Methodist minister. She was born 17 April 1864, Linwood, Louisa Co., Iowa, and died 13 April 1944, Benson, Minn.
There were two children of the marriage (one was possibly adopted).

Salem---The funeral services for the late Dr. W. A. Dilts who died at his home in Indianola, Monday afternoon held in the Methodist church at Salem Thursday afternoon was attended by a large number of his friends and relatives of this vicinity. The Rev. B. J. Hankins of Hedrick had charge of the services. Rev. Hankins was pastor of the Salem church when the Dr. Dilts family resided here. Member of the A.F. & A.M. of Salem attended the services in a body. Mr. and Mrs. Leon Smith sang the two selections "The End of the Road", and "Under His Wing" accompanied by Mrs. Loren Garretson. The undertakers, Orr and Son were of Indianola.
William Amos Dilts, eldest child of Thomas and Martha Kirkpatrick Dilts, was born near Wapello Louisa County, Iowa, January 13, 1860. When a small child he moved with his parents to Henry county near Lowell and then a little later the family moved to a farm five miles east of Salem. He attended the public schools, graduated from Whitler College and then attended the medical department of Iowa State university. Later he attended the college of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk and graduated from that institution March 1, 1887. Soon after his graduation, on March 16, he was united in marriage to Nellie E. Donaldson, daughter of David and Laycock Donaldson. David Donaldson was a pioneer Methodist minister.
The Doctor and his wife settled at Salem where he began practice of his profession and during the twenty years he resided in this locality, he built a reputation for character and efficiency that made him one of the leading physicians of the county.
In the spring of 1907 worn with the twenty years of active practice, he moved with his family to Indianola, expecting to retire from the strenuous duties of the physician's life. For some time the family lived on a farm east of town and then moved to the present home.
He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Salem and later transferred his membership to Indianola. He was a member of the order for 49 years. He leaves to mourn his passing, his widow and four children, Elbertine Harold [Harbold], Mildred Hines both of Benson, Minn., Donald and Keith of Indianola and four grandchildren, five nephews and one niece and numerous friends.
His last illness began in August, 1933, and though confined to the bed part of the time only excellent care and treatment permitted him to live with his loved ones this long. He passed from this earth, July 8, 1935, at the advanced age of 75 years, 5 months and 25 days. Interment was in the east cemetery and the following nephews were the pallbearers, J. M. Garretson, Wayne Loren Garretson, S. D. Garretson, Forest and Gerald Donaldson.
Relatives and friends from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hines, Mrs. Clay Harbold of Benson, Minn., Mrs. Nellie Dilts, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Dilts, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Dilts, Mrs. J. C. Maine, Mrs. C. M. Conklin of Indianola, Will Donaldson of Norfolk, Nebr., Jess Kerr of Burlington, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Donaldson and children of Mt. Pleasant, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jackman of Lowell.
