John Joseph Dilts

John Joseph Dilts was born 10 July 1864 in Henry Co., IA and died 2 March 1931. John entered Whittier College in Salem, Iowa in 1880. In 1884 he began to study medicine with his brother, and in 1887-1888 was a student at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Keokuk; he married Zoe Mena _____, who was born 28 October 1875 and died 8 November 1957; they had no children.

A search of the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Census shows that John J. Dilts was married first to Etta Triplett and had a daughter Leann Winifred.

On all of the census records 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 his occupation was doctor.

On the 1930 U. S. Census he is married to Zoe.

A published obituary in the Mount Pleasant News October 29, 1951 states Zoe Dilts died in San Antonio, Texas.

Pleasant, Iowa, Saturday, March 7, 1931, Page 2, Col. 5: John Joseph Dilts, son of Thomas and Martha Dilts, was born at Lowell, Iowa, July 13, 1863, and departed this life at his home in Salem March 2, 1931, at the age of 67 years, 5 month and 19 days. He moved with his parents to the Donaldson Chapel community in 1870 and received his early education in the public schools of Henry county and at Whittier college in Salem, Iowa. Later attending the Keokuk Medical college from which he was graduated in 1888. He began his practice at Lowell but in 1891 he located at Primrose, Iowa, where he remained until 1907 when he came to Salem and continued at his chosen profession until his death. In the last year when health was failing he continued to give of his services whenever he was able to go. While living at Primrose he became a member of the Mason lodge and moving to Salem he transferred his membership to the Salem lodge. He was united in marriage with Miss Etta Dilts on Sept. 25, 1888, who preceded him in death in 1920. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Winifred Becker of Salem. He was again united in marriage with Mrs. Zoe Turner, who with his daughter survives him. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. O.A. Garretson of Mt. Pleasant and one brother, Dr. W. A. Dilts of Indianola; one aged uncle, John Dilts of Denver, Colorado; his son-in-law Elijah Becker; one grandson, Frank John Becker of Salem; two step-daughters, Mrs. Lona Gardner of Boonesville, Ind.; and Mrs. Beverly Canby of Ft. Wright, N. Y.; besides a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Interment was in the South cemetery and the services at the grave were in charge of the Masons. Relatives and friends attending from a distance were Dr. and Mrs. Howard Garretson, Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Garretson, Gilbert Wayne and Loren Garretson of Mt. Pleasant; Dr. and Mrs. W. A. Dilts, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Dilts of Indianola; Mr. and Mrs. George Canby, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Canby, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Canby; C. F. Collins and daughter, W. F. Coles, Dr. Frank Coles, Dr. J. W. Laird of Mt. Pleasant; Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Loomis of Heron, S. D.; Mrs. Lona Gardner of Booneville, Ind.; Mrs. Beverly Canby of Ft. Wright, N. Y.; and Rev. and Mrs. R. I. Brown and sons of Lone Tree, Iowa.
