Individual Details
Wilber Talmadge Briles
(2 Feb 1884 - 21 Oct 1951)
He is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside his parents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the son of Daniel Eli Briles, Sr. Thus, we know that he was alive in 1909. This caption spells his first name as "Wilber" rather than "Wilbur."
His great grandnephew David Elwood Briles (great grandson of Wilbur's brother Enoch Elwood) looks a lot like him!
His first name is sometimes given as "Wilbur" and sometimes as "Wilber."
His two daughters attended the funeral of Worthy Harwood Briles, the son of Wilbur's brother Enoch Elwood Briles, in July 1979.
The 1910 U.S. Census of the 8th Judical Precinct of Ellis County, Texas (Series T624, Roll 1549, Page 274) lists WilbEr T. Briles and his family immediately after the entry for his mother Emily Briles [Note that this particular census taker was not very careful! A number of mistakes are know in the data below, all of which are noted. Thus, one does not know whether the other data is correct.] The census was taken on April 5, 1910:
Wilbert [should be Wilbur] Briles, Head of household, white, male 26 years old, married 1 year, born in Texas, parents born in NC, occupation=farmer.
Maggie Briles, wife of Wilber, white, female, 24 years old, married 1 year, mother of 1 child who was still living as of the date of the census.
Winona Briles, son of Wilber [was a DAUGHTER, not a son], white, male [was a FEMALE, not a male], age 1/12 year [should be 4/12 year (or 4 month), for she was born in December 1909 and the 1910 Census was taken in April 1910.]
A visit to the Milford Cemetery, Milford, Ellis Co., TX, on April 26, 2007, confirmed the birth and death dates for Wilbur Briles provided above. His headstone gives his first name as "Wiber," so that's the name used in these files.
