Daniel Eli Briles III
(1874 - 1940)
To help distinguish him from his father, Daniel Eli II, Daniel Eli III went by "Eli" or "D.E." rather than "Daniel" or "Dan."
He is not listed as living with his parents in the 1880 Randolph County, N.C., Census.
He is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside his parents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the son of Daniel Eli Briles II Thus, we know that he was alive in 1909.
Note that the photo does NOT include a wife or any children for Daniel Eli III.
The headstone transcriptions in Italy Cemetery in Italy, Ellis County, Texas, list a "Jonnie Mildred" as the child of D. Eli Briles and M. This child is listed below with the assumption that "M" stood for "Mary."
According to the 1910 Ellis County, Texas, Census (see details below), he was born in about 1880. Briles genealogy information from Jack E. Briles, Sr., New Albany, IN, jb50200@aol.com, Feb. 2002, says that he was born in 1874. The 1920 Ellis County, Texas, Census (see details below) agrees that Daniel Eli III as born in1874, which is the date used for these files.

Eli D. Briles: Head of Household, White, Male, Age 30 (= born about 1880), Married once, Married 3 years, Born in Texas, Father and Mother born in Texas (hard to read birth locations of parents). [Whoever provided the information to the census taker was wrong about all of these birth locations.]
Mary Briles: Wife of Eli D., White, Female, Age 25, Married once, Married 3 years, Mother of 1 child who was still living as of April 1910, Born in Texas, as were her parents.
Aline Briles: Daughter of Eli D., White, Female, 7 months old, Born in Texas, Father and Mother born in Texas.
Fannie John: Sister-in-law of Eli D., White, Female, Age 20, Single, Born in Texas, Father and Mother born in Texas.
Knox John: Brother-in-law of Eli D., White, Male, Age 28, Single, Born in Texas, Father and Mother born in Texas, Occupation = Farmer.
Rufus Young: Servant, Male, Black, Age 46, Single, Born in Texas, Father and Mother born in Texas.

His great grandnephew David Elwood Briles (great grandson of Daniel Eli's brother Enoch Elwood) looks a lot like him!
Leona Hays Connally Briles, the wife of the only child of Eli's brother Enoch Elwood Briles, said that Eli raised his family in Italy, Texas.
The list of attendees at the August 4, 1974 Briles Reunion in Italy, Texas, provides two children for Daniel Eli III and his wife that are not provided by other sources: Earnestine Briles and Otis Briles. Both are thus included below, along with their descendants whose names are also provided in the reunion list.
A visit to the Italy Cemetery, Italy, Ellis Co., TX, on April 26, 2007, confirmed the birth and death dates for Daniel Eli Briles III provided above.
